    Default Divx ?

I was wondering if anyone on here had a DIVX player and what it was all about. Any info would be great.

Here you go. Sums up the history of DIVX players rather succinctly.

I don't have a stand alone Divx player, but I do have the XBMC app for the xbox which is the best media center I have used. I use this to stream divx/xvid files from my PC to my plasma!

My first DVD player was a DVD/Divx combo. At the time, there was no way of knowing whether DVD or Divx was going to prove successful, much like the current HD-DVD/Blu-Ray battle. The studios were split, with Disney, Fox and Paramount supporting Divx exclusively, Warner and Sony DVD and Universal releasing on both.

Of course, the major difference in the DVD/Divx war was that Divx players would also play DVDs. The advantage here was when Divx did die out, you still had a DVD player that you could use.

I think what killed the Divx format was that there was such a backlash against the format by the videophile community, releasing films in pan-and-scan with no extras and having to have the player hooked up to a phone line (a real pain, in my opinion).

Still, having lived through one DVD war, I'm a bit more wary on this new war. I have an HD-DVD player, and since I own an HD-DVD player I'd love to see HD win. But really the only reason I bought an HD player was because my current DVD stopped working and I needed a new DVD player anyway. So I'm not against Blu-Ray, though the price is still too high.

I do think that one of the two formats will "win out." It took about a year to sort out the Divx-DVD war. I would not be surprised to see the HD/Blu war settled sometime this spring or summer.

Which DIVX are we talking about?

    1) Players that support the DivX codec?
    2) Players that played Divx discs that expired a certain amount of time after watching them?

Well, I was talking about #2, the old Divx system from the 1990s. I'm not absolutely sure that's what the original poster was asking about, but that's where Feyd's link went to. I just added a bit since I actually owned one of those Divx machines back in the late '90s.

Well I assumed the OP was talking about a player capable of playing the divx codec?
