Default Activate my iPhone 4, or wait for the iPhone 5?

Well I was due for an upgrade, and got the iphone 4 at a really good price. Then about 20 minutes after placing the order, a mentioned it to a friend who said I should wait for the iPhone 5 due this fall(). Of course there are no details on the iPhone 5, but a place listing the likely new features, the one appealing one is a very slightly larger screen size. And when it does come out, I'm sure it'll cost at least twice what the 4 did, even with the upgrade discount.

Anyway, I have 30 days to send the phone back no questions asked. What to do, what to do?

Your current phone works? Battery is good? Do you really think you'll feel that bad owning an iphone 4 for what, 2ish years with the 5 coming out in the fall? Answer these questions and your path is clear =)

Current phone is the 3G, which barely holds a charge a charge all day, and seems increasingly slow. I just wish I knew what features the 5 might have. I dunno what more I could want, but still lol.

Considering the average length contract (and before you can upgrade again) is 2 years, why not just go for it? Is it really tenable to keep using a phone that holds a charge for 5 minutes till this fall so you can have a "way cooler" phone? I'd activate the four, and look forward to the 6 or 7... Or really what I would do is exactly what I did do... Get an android phone instead

For starters, you should know a LOT about the iphone 5 pretty soon because they usually announce and release in late june, early july iirc.

That aside, I upgraded from my 3g that was super slow (suffering from an update it simply couldnt handle) and low battery life to the iphone 4 and I love this phone.

I think what you should ask yourself is this: 1) Can you reasonably make it to the unveiling of the iPhone 5, and 2) Even if you could consider two things a) the iPhone 4 will drop in price $100 or more - so I'm not sure if that beats the deal you just got, and b) the iPhone 5 will be more than what you're currently paying for the iPhone 4 (because you said you got a deal).

Basically, if you waited - do you think there is anything the iPhone 5 could possibly have that is worth $100, and/or, if you wait out the likely short wait, will you save money when they drop the pricetag of the iphone 4?

Almost all the industry insiders agree that the iPhone 5 will be later this year than in previous years, so I wouldn't bet on a June/July release. Announcement maybe, but not release.

And there's a lot going around that it will be a LTE device with around a 4" screen (3.7" would sound like a better size, imo). And the big buzz is that it will have a multi-core processor (supposedly the A5). NFC capabilities.

The CEO of Orange stated that the iP5 is “smaller and thinner”, which scares me (I like my phone to have a heavy duty metal body that I don't have to cradle like a premature baby). A metal body, reminiscent of the original iPhone (which I still like its design most). So, it'll probably just look like a smaller iPad 2, with a thinner bezel.

All sources are pointing towards a September release, too.

Personally, I'd wait. But I always wait for the newest devices (I'm still on my OG Droid, hah).
    My Set-Up:
    LG 42PQ30
    Sony Playstation 3
    Toshiba HD-A2, Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on

I have been following this for awhile as I have a 3GS which is fine but a bit slow and my poor wife is rocking a 3G which barely works anymore. We have been holding out for the 5G but it is being delayed until August time frame. It will likely be more like a 4GS than a five from everything I have read. It will have the same dual core processor as the iPad2 which will make it really powerful as well as reduce power usage(better batt life). It will NOT be 4G nor will it have NFC chips this year. I would either wait another 2 months and get an iPhone 5 or wait 2 months and get the 4G for $99 instead of the standard $199.

I've heard the oppisite, no LTE with iPhone 5 and iPad 2 already doesn't have NFC so that makes me wonder if iphone 5 will have it. This is mostly from following engadget though, for what it's worth.

I too follow Engadget. I've just been pulling what I hear from good sites like PhoneDog, Phone Arena, GSM Arena and others (including Engadget). I'd expect LTE to be released with it, tough. Apple's not too well known for trying out new technologies that often, though (they joined the Blu-ray Board of Directors in 2005, and still will not include a BD drive with systems).

I'll expect a leak sometime within the next two months, though. They always happen.

Well someone pointed out that in that 30 days I could re activate my old phone, and de activate the new one if I wanna send it back, so I went ahead and activated the Iphone 4... it is soooo much faster and nicer in every way! lol You select something, and it just loads quickly! You don't even need to wait for it to fail to open the 1st time lol. I don't think I'll be looking back.

There's always something better on the horizon, but that doesn't mean what you got now isn't good. I know my Droid 2 was as big an upgrade over my last smart phone (Verizons VX6700).
