    Actually, it's not the controller layout that's the problem; otherwise the adapter wouldn't be necessary as GameStop will be selling wireless Gamecube controllers that plug into the Wiimote and function as Classic Controller Pros. The problem is that serious fighting game players need a wired controller because even a fraction of a second delay can ruin a match. The Wii U doesn't have native controller ports so if they didn't come up with some kind of solution they'd have alienated the hardcore community.
