Default Blu-ray disc sales down 27% from last week. Lowest revenue in 3+ months.

http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/08/19...ding-august-1/

And DVD sales were actually up.

To me, news like this goes to show that Blu-ray's successful weeks are not only flukes, but are completely dependent on the strength of only one or two new releases.

Definitely not a good sign as Blu-ray heads toward Christmas.

Batman Begins is the only reason the previous 3 weeks did decent. New releases have sucked so far on BD. Its going to be the same way for the next few weeks until Iron Man arrives.

I don't see why it would be a bad sign for Christmas since the new releases is going to carry Blu Ray from October to the end of the year anyway. It's what happens after when things can get real interesting.

Oh noes! Blu-Ray is teh DOOOUMMM'''DD!!!

Seriously? What a sad smackdown.

So how are DVD sales overall? They still down compared to previous years? What about Blu-Ray? I'm guessing this year has had better sales overall than the last... whereas DVD most likely hit its peak 2-3 years back and is going downhill... until it meets VHS somewhere between VCD and Laserdisc.

Yeah, I guess sales do suck - I've been too busy myself in the summer to watch movies - then again, what's DVD?

More BD players = more sold movies. Duhh.

Though you are comparing a format that on a good week sells 250k disc s(combined) vs one that sells 5-8 or so million.

And at one point that format sold 10-20 million, DVD sales are on a decline, Blu-Ray sales aren't.

Is it really that hard for people to read instructions?....Ah the sales forum is just above the regular smackdown forum...not that hard to put it in the right place.

BD has had some weak releases as of late. I don't even remember what was my last new release on BD. I did pick up Evil Dead II on BD the other day, terrfic movie by the way.

You expect a format to substain high sales numbers when there is nothing but new releases coming out? People don't buy catalog titles anymore and when they do buy they are $5. Of course sales are on a decline.

Blu-ray is only increasing because prices are so expensive on the discs. Its a nice false sense of security for you guys. You guys keep gushing over having less then 1% of the market

BTW. Wrong forum. Hopefully the mods will not ban you per the rules (posting sales data outside of the sales subforum may result in a ban). There is a sales forum and this gets discussed every week in the Nielsen thread. This past weeks sales has already been discussed.

LOL, I just reported the thread, so it could get moved.

On topic, bad week for blu-ray I guess.

August 19, 2008

* Camp Rock (Walt Disney)
* Hannah Montana And Miley Cyrus: Best Of Both Worlds Concert Tour (Walt Disney)
* Justice League: Season One (Warner)
* The Life Before Her Eyes (Magnolia)
* Nixon: Director's Cut (Walt Disney)
* Prom Night (2008) (Sony)
* The Proposition (First Look)
* The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior (Universal)
* Street Kings (Fox)
* Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles - The Complete First Season (Warner)

Although, this week is going to be bad too to some degree also.
I think it's pretty obvious that blu-ray is very dependent on day-date releases or recent blockbuster catalogue releases (within last 1-2 years). It doesn't surprise me when we have off weeks with a release schedule that isn't strong.

Last week:
* 7 Seconds (Sony)
* Belly (Lionsgate)
* CJ7 (Sony)
* The Doors (Lionsgate)
* Elvis: Viva Las Vegas (CMT)
* Felon (Sony)
* Half Past Dead (Sony)
* Kiss of the Spider Woman (City Lights)
* Maximum Risk (Sony)
* Prison Break: Season Three (Fox)
* The Secret (2008) (Image)
* Smart People (Walt Disney)
* xXx: State of the Union (Sony)

Doesn't look too good either.
But Next week:

* Action Starter Pack (Universal)
* The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) (Warner)
* Afro Samurai: Season One (FUNimation)
* Blue Man Group: How to Be a Megastar Live! (Rhino)
* Dude, Where's My Car? (MGM)
* End of Days (Universal)
* Heroes: Season One (Universal)
* Heroes: Season Two (Universal)
* Miami Vice (2006) (Universal)
* The Nightmare Before Christmas (Walt Disney)

* Pale Rider (Warner)
* Postal (UMVD)
* Redbelt (Sony)
* U-571 (Universal)
* What Happens in Vegas (Fox)

Looks quite robust for me.
Bold are ones I plan on buying or have bought.

Well there really hasn't been that much out. Movie studios are still dragging their feet putting on the classics.
