Default Blu-ray Recorders Taking Japan by Storm

Quote:
Market research firm BCN, Inc. has determined that during the month of April, sales of Blu-ray recorders for the first time exceed those of DVD recorders. Additionally, Blu-ray recorders made up 32 percent of the overall optical disc player/recorder sales for the month. Sales are 21 time higher than this time last year, showing that Japan is adopting Blu-ray at a record pace.

Panasonic led in sales, with 46 percent of the market, followed by Sony with 38% of Blu-ray recorder sales.

Sign of things to come?

I would love to have affordable Blu-Ray recorders here in the US.

Do you think they are affordable in Japan? The Japanese just spend their money on stuff they want.

As I had mentioned before in previous posts, one of the reasons why Blu-Ray will do well will be it multi platform use - games, pc (recording and storage), and of course movies.

Once blu-ray recorders drop below 100 dollars (as Ackbak mentioned he would buy one sub 110) - we're going to see adoption rates seriously go up. That price point however is probably about 2 to 3 years from now. Lowest priced recorder going for around 275-300 now. Being that these things tend to drop by 1/4 to 1/3 every 6 months to 10 months.

Are you kidding? There's a reason that none of the CEs has released a Blu-Ray recorder in the US. There is almost no market whatsoever for $1500-2000 Blu-Ray recorders here. And that's not a knock against Blu-Ray, its just our market here.

The Japanese market appears to have a much larger "early adopter" type of customer base with people willing to spend substantial amounts of money on gadgets and cool stuff.

someone with more knowledge then me should chime in here, but I'm fairly sure recorders always did much better in jp then here becuase of the interface. Japan has a standard that is followed for cable, we dont. This means you can buy your recorder at your favorite store, hook it up to your cable, and use it like we do our dvrs. You cant do that here in the states, though they are trying (cablecard).

I think Tivo and cable DVRs have pretty much killed the DVD recorder market here.

They're over 100,000yen or $1,000 for the recorders, and even for most players here. But then the DVD recorders are nearly as expensive because they don't have basic models, most have x00gb HDDs etc. Most, and I mean like 99% of electronics here are more expensive than in Canada/US.
