Cool 55.85% of ID4 sales May 5-11 were Blu-ray!!!!

Found this interesting article - "The Buzz" , page 26 in the May 25-31 issue of Home Media Magazine:

Quote:
Of all copies of Independence Day sold the week of May 5-11, 55.85% were the Blu-ray version.

That's just awesome! Maybe that Sony guy was right when he said last year "in 3 years, there will only be Blu-ray". Geez, I'd better put my DVD & HD DVD collection up on eBay NOW! Oh, but wait - then I continued reading the article -

Quote:
At first glance this makes it seem that picking up a Blu-ray copy a top priority for ID4 fans, but further examination of the Nielsen VideoScan data tells another story. Total sales of ID4 that week amounted to about 1/10th of 1% of all ID4 copies ever sold on any format. So most people looking to own ID4 probably already have it.

Factoring out VHS, Blu-ray amounts to only 1.2% of all-time ID4 sales, which means BD has undersold the DVD by nearly 8,000%. By comparison, ID4 DVDs have outsold the VHS version by 461%. Comparing those conversion factors reveals Blu-ray has a long way to go.
Sigh. And the sad part is the author (John Latchem, Assistant Managing Editor), feels that films actually improved in high-def are limited to "special effects blockbusters" like ID4 -

Quote:
As far as catalog goes, DVD quality is probably sufficient for most titles. The range of films actually improved in HD is probably limited to special effects blockbusters such as ID4.

So after only 10 weeks of being available on , its accounted for 1.2% of the sales of a title that's been available on dvd for over 5yrs. Not bad.

This would make sense, being that ID4 has been on DVD for a long while, this doesn't surprise me. Also, ID4 is a bad ass movie, so why would any Blu-ray enthusiast not want it?

As I said in another thread, this is exactly why old movies will continue to be released on BR.

If noone is buying the SD DVD, ANY profit, no matter how small is found money. Especially if there wasnt alot of money invested in the HD release itself.

And at comparing ID4 BR sales (2 months) to ID4 DVD sales (5 years).

I don't understand the math - if I sell 100% less than something else, then I've sold zero. How can you sell MORE than 100% less than something else?

Seems if they have sold 1.2% of the total disc sales, then they are running 98.8% less than DVD sales in total.

Whatever on that fuzzy math - someone can clarify that for me if they want.

I stuggle to buy ID4 on BD, as I do already have it on VHS and DVD at this time. Do I want a third copy? Darn right I do! But, I'm not sure I'm going to pony up for it yet.

Going by your numbers of 2 months and 5 years, calculated by weeks, ID4 has only been out 3.1% of the amount of time on blu as opposed to dvd. For 3.1% of the time that ID4 on blu has been sold, it has captured 1.2% of total ID4 DVD sales.

8/260=3.1%

This is a static number, depending on the success of blu ray. If blu ray dominates SDDVD, the time of ID4 sold on DVD will diminish, and the percentage of ID4 on blu will increase.

Do you have a point?

Your argument fails miserably on the presumption that the title will continue to sell as well, as when it was first released on BD.

The actual numbers would probably be way less interesting. It would be surprising if they sold 2k total, which means that Fox is losing their ass on the release. It's funny, that the BD boyz claim DVD sales are dropping, yet claim that a small percentage of something that isn't selling is great.

Of course you have no idea how many copies sold, no idea how much Fox put into this title, and no idea how much (if any) profit they have made on it.

But hey, having 0 information has never stopped you from posting before has it? I guess there is no real reason to expect your behavior to be any different in this instance.

Judging from the general numbers the insiders over at bluray.com have given for other catalog titles in terms of authoring, encoding, and unit sales, I don't think he is too far off the mark.

And due to it being a newer film, with less market saturation, and the incredible reviews over it's image quality, I'm sure I Robot did much better.

Its found money. It will continue to sell as more people buy Blu-ray players.

DVD sales at this point for the title were dead, and since there is no major advertising expense here, the break even point is probably ridiculously low.

getting any profit from a title whose sales were dead is a good thing. Multiple that by 10,000s of titles in the studio libraries and it starts to add up.

HD DVD and Blu-ray releases have had a much more consistent and longer sales tail than DVD releases.

Add in the fact that this is before Wal-Mart just increased its nationwide Blu-ray movie facings on display to over 140 titles (from a few dozen) and there is much more potential for sales in the future.

1.2%? Thats presumably tens of thousands, isn't it? ID4 couldn't have sold less than a couple million I'd imagine...

Regardless, the film did come out ** 12 years ago ** at the box office and 8 years ago on DVD, and has had LOTS of reissues / special editions, so expectations of it doing 10% week one would be ridiculous. 10% over BDs life would be impressive.

Interestingly ID4s DVD sales must've been quite strong when the BD was released to account for even 44% of sales (or 0.5% of LTD) - BD boosting SDVD sales?

I suspect it sold near the double digit millions on DVD over the lifetime of its release....

On the low side 5 million or so copies.. Which would be approx 60K copies on Blu-Ray. If studios clear $15-18 per BD catalog title (using the Lionsgate analyst numbers) that would be close to $1 million. According to some of the insiders I have read at AVS, it costs approx 500K to encode a day and date title (top tier) with advanced extras as well. A catalog title could cost less or more depending on whether or not the title was remastered. I suspect Fox made money on this title and will continue to make money.
