Default PS3 sales down 27% in April 2008

When sales of Blu-ray players drop 40% in Feb from the previous month, we heard about the theory that consumers are buying lots more PS3 solely as Blu-ray players instead of SAL Blu-ray players.

Well, so much for the theory. Both sales of PS3 and Blu-ray SAL are down.

Probably because everyone and their brother is waiting for the MGS4/Dual Shock 3 bundle which comes out in a few weeks?

And for proper perspective... How does it compare to March/April 2007?

Its seasonal. Nothing unexpected here. Both Xbox 360 and PS3 declined by similar amounts and it was already accounted for by Sony in its annual projections. Still on track to sell 10M units world in their FY 2008.

Sony is satisfied with PS3 sales otherwise they would drop the price.

On the margins, might actually have had less PS3 sales for use as a dedicated player after the March post format war surge.

Seems the PS3 kept track and actually closed a bit with the Xbox 360.

You are taking pleasure in seeing lower PS3 sales? Whatever floats your boat I guess.

Isn't that what the smackdown forum is for? To post these type of information?

So consumers aren't buying PS3 solely as Blu-ray players after all?

And where in your cut and paste post have you given any evidence to the contrary? I don't see a link to a poll showing what percentage of new PS3 owners bought it for Blu-ray playback. Did you just forget to add it to your post?

The 360 sales are down by a higher percent than PS3 sales.

Nothing big here.

If it's relevant to high def, yes. This isn't, as the sales drop is unrelated and seasonal.

Weren't you the one who argue that more consumers are buying more PS3 solely as Blu-ray players, which explains the drop in Blu-ray SAL sales in Feb. and March?

Data shows it's not true. Sales of PS3 down 27% in April.

Overall, the US game industry's total retail take for hardware, software, and accessories amounted to $1.7 billion combined, up 57 percent from the $1.1 billion it posted for March 2007.

So much for the argument that Blu-ray SAL sales are down in Feb. and March is due to the slowing economy.

Sales of US game industry's up 57 percent from the $1.1 billion it posted for March 2007.

I would say those who are purchasing specifically for Blu-ray resulted in the lower percentage drop for the PS3. It's still semi-common knowledge that it's the best route to go for Blu-ray playback after all. Once these cheaper alternatives finally get here en masse, it'll be interesting to see which way the PS3 sales go (likely to be skewed by that highly awaited game, I'll admit).

Shouldn't this be in the sales data sub-forum?

I thought there was anecdotal evidence that the March sales for the PS3 may have been somewhat positively affected by some 10,000's of people buying them as pseudo dedicated Blu-ray players right after the format war end, and when the PS3 was the cheapest best performing Blu-ray value , and was readily available.

But the volume of the PS3 as a Blu-ray only player purchases would pale to the amount of people buying the PS3 as its primary use as a gaming console. So PS3 volumes would not be dramatically affected by dedicated BLu-ray player usage. In any case, March PS3 as a Blu-ray player sales is not inconsistent with a April drop in PS3 sales. It could indicate a March bump in sales to that market segment.

The volume of PS3 sales is much greater than SAL sales were in the past so any PS3 substitution for SAL sales or SAL inventory issues would have a greater effect.
