Default Tartan US: "Oldboy" Blu-ray outselling entire DVD line!

Quote:
Tartan is reducing BD production expenses by sharing promotional responsibilities and packaging design between its U.S. and U.K. outposts. The supplier already feels successful in its BD operations. Its single BD title, Oldboy, is currently Tartan’s top-selling release, trumping the company’s entire standard DVD product line.

Going forward with one high-def format will ultimately prove advantageous for indies, believes Tartan Video president Tony Borg.

“Starting in the new year, as HD DVD was dying, there was less clutter, and the Oldboy version began outselling its standard DVD version,” Borg says. “The quality of our films, the production values, will be transferring very nicely to high-def.”

Cool! I think this is a first.

This has to be a first. And is big news. I have to think that the end of the format war has a lot to do with this. I know I feel like I can buy movies on Blu-Ray with a lot more confidence than I did last year at this time.

Just another mindf*ck movie. It was well done and great. However, it is not the type of movie you could watch over and over. One viewing is good enough!

Maybe for some, but I watch it quite often, and I feel it gets better every time I watch it. Knowing what happens doesn't take away from my enjoyment of how great the movie is.

I remember reading that the Blu-ray release of Oldboy was going to be a high-def test run of sorts for Tartan in the U.S. I really hope that with this news Tartan gets rolling with some more Blu-ray releases very soon.

No more than checking my bank balance before making a purchase is party pooping. Don't you actually want to know what the deal is?

Yes the deal is that "Its single BD title, Oldboy, is currently Tartan’s top-selling release". That means it is selling more than any other title they have. If it is 20,000,000,000,000 copies or 200 it doesn't change the fact that this story says it is their biggest seller and that this is interesting news. Why should we care how many copies that works out to?

honestly, i'm going to party poop too.

i love tartan, and love the works of park-chan wook. his vengeance trilogy (includes oldboy) is, bottom line, fucking awesome.

but here in the usa, tartan doesn't release many titles, even on dvd. i've seen only a couple that weren't foreign, like hillside strangler. it's foreign fare, which isn't exactly top mover stuff, especially since wal-mart is no longer carrying tartan new releases like they used to (my 3 local walmarts all used to carry day and date tartan dvd's for a month each).

this blu is outselling their entire catalog? that isn't a sign of the blu's strength, as i've never seen it in stores, nor is it rarely, if ever, offered for trade here. it sounds like a sign that their dvd line just ain't selling.

(and for the record, i've bought over 30 tartan titles, so i'm not shitting on anything. just giving another perspective). w/o hard numbers, this announcement is kinda devoid of any arguing point.

Because if they are selling 0 DVDs and 2 BDs of Oldboy, it isn't really good news. No matter what, these guys don't seem to be selling many DVDs at this point. Which means you guys are happy about a BD selling more than nothing. Talk about desperation.
