Default Blu-ray percentage of total sales

Talk about perfect timing - we are discussing the percentage of sales Blu-ray was getting, and an article appears on The Hollywood Reporter.

Of course, I've made a chart with the data:

Code:

Title Release Percentage
PotC At World's End 120407 3.7
Simpsons Movie 121807 2.8
Michael Clayton 021907 5.5
30 Days of Night 022608 8.9
No Country for Old Men 031108 9.8
Hitman 031108 12.6
Note: those are percentages of unit sales of BD over total sales (not BD-to-DVD).

Facts are good. In that article, are they using "total sales" and "total unit sales" as the same thing? Total sales sounds like a percentage of revenue, while total unit sales sounds more like the number actualy sold. I'm not in retail and dont know how precise their terminology is.

One quote from that article seems to say they mean actual unit sales. The whole article would not really make much sense if they were talking about revenue.

Quote:
Fox's "Hitman," also released March 11, fared even better, generating 12.6% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray.

Exactly, they are talking about units throughout.

The only side reference to price and revenue is at the end, and incidentally mentioning HD DVD:

Quote:
Adams said studios are keen to derive a greater chunk of their sales from Blu-ray because of the price differential. The average street price for a newly released DVD over its first three months in stores is $20.57, Adams said, while the Blu-ray version goes for $31.31.

"The biggest title of last year, in terms of high-definition disc sales, was 'Transformers,' which derived a little more than 4% of its total unit sales from the Blu-ray Disc version," Adams said. "But in terms of revenue, the percentage was 6% of the total."

I wonder who bought this Blu-ray version of Transformers?? Did it have lossless audio?

History erasers. HD DVD, the little format that could but ultimately didn't (thanx BDA and especially Sony!).

If you say that because of Transformers, it'd have sold even more on Blu-ray anyway. It was a case of the strength of the movie and its huge appeal for 'young males.'

Truetrue (and the sole reason for that was the presence of the PS3 naturally).

Will be interesting to see how well this sells on BD when it finally gets released on this format.

didn't 300 did beter than transformers in % of units ?

Transformers 13.7 mil units of DVD, and 0.239 mil units of HD DVD
300 12.9 mil units of DVD, and 0.472 units of (BD+ HD DVD)

transofrmers 1.74%
300 3.65%

so where are they getting 4% for transformers ??
or are they counting 300 BD alone and 300 HD DVD alone against DVD of 300?

I liked this article also.

The one part i wish it didn't say was that average price was $31 per title for BD.

To me this is too expensive, although I believe studios are starting to understand, even Fox lowered list price on some of its already released titles to the more normal $28.95 from $39.95

To be honest, i think sales at amazon for titles like National Treasure 1&2 with a price point on sale of $19.99 will open alot of eyes.

To me having an on sale price of $20 will really help the volume of discs start flowing into consumers hands. My bet is National Treasure will continue the percentage of BD sales when compared to DVD.

of course releasing good films will help also.

http://icv2.com/articles/home/12267.html

Almost 30% of the sales of Appleseed: Ex Machina so far have been in the Blu-ray format.
