Default 9 mil. Blu discs sold to date; 3 million already this year

Source: Hollywood in Hidef

Quote:
Blu-ray Disc sales continue to pick up steam, with total U.S. sales since inception (about a year-and-a-half-ago) hitting 9 million units through March 16, according to HMR research.

In just 11 weeks this year, BD unit sales have hit 3 million units, seemingly putting the format on pace to easily hit at least 15 million units for 2008.

After averaging weekly sales ranging from 200,000 - 300,000 the past two months or so, sales spiked up to 319,000 units, driven by Miramax's release of "No Country For Old Men."

The Oscar-winner, despite having few special features of any kind, sold a whopping 68,000 units the week ending March 16. That's double the next closest title, Fox's "Hitman: Special Edition," which was also a relatively strong seller.

Prior weekly top-sellers this year were ranging from 10,000 - 30,000 units.
Look for even stronger numbers in the coming weeks with much bigger box-office titles slated for release.
As a reference:

BD sales in the full first quarter of 2007 were about 830,000.
BD sales in all of 2007 were 6.1 million.

Title says discs. Discs are software, standalones are hardware.

But don't you see...the news which pertains to the Title is pretty positive. It is necessary to try to find something gloomy and full of doom to divert the topic from it's Title because positive things are B A D.

Seriously though, thanks for the news Grubert. I was curious where total disc sales were at, having only seen percentages lately.

You're welcome.

There's positive things there for HD DVD as well - they must have sold nearly a million!

my bad.

it's just that i'm sure the BDA would be more interested in focusing on disc sales right now than hardware sales. it's all a numbers game.

And DVD video shipments were 8.9 billion in 2007, in North America. So giving the benefit of the doubt, that is still way less than 1%.

And LOL at No Country sales, after the Blu-Ray contingent held that up as proof that Blu-Ray is @ 10-15% of DVD.

68,000 is actually pretty good, considering it isn't a big action/FX/blockbuster movie by any stretch of the imagination (it made only $73 million at the box office).

This time last year, Casino Royale sold under 60,000 in its first three weeks.

not really. this was posted under the smackdown forum. and it is a valid question. but let's go ahead and focus on the positive numbers because we want to give everybody that's bought into the format good vibrations, yeah? we released bd live and once again left out DTS-MA and primarily what PS3 owners really wanted. no one with a PS3 cares about web interactivity! ask all those poor souls trying to play rainbow six vegas over the weekend.

but again, i digress.

thanks for the news, grubert. i still want to know where hardware sales are.

i think if there was an actual breakdown of what sells each week, people would see that 68,000 is pretty good.

I'm not sure I agree 100% with your stats work there, Mike.

In dollars it probably was. I think the Video Business article might be unclear in that regard.

So do I. And as soon as any info appears, I'll put it up. I like sales figures.

Compare that to 7 million movies and 125 million TV shows sold on Itunes.
I can't seem to find any data on other down-loadable/on-demand services.

And those 7 million movies were only sold over the period of a year, versus over 2 and half years for Blu-Ray.

Well he did say Blu-Ray only represents 1 percent of DVD sales, which he got correct. He just grossly overestimated the number of DVDs sold.

Lets break down the numbers (in dollars) from the website you provided:

Box Office: 9.6 Billion
DVD: 23.4 billion
Movie Downloads: 689 million (in 2006) projected to be 1.6 billion in 2008
Blu-Ray (a whopping) 300 million

How many of them were in hidef? Just so that we can compare apples to apples.

Some 2008 forecasts from the above article and other sources

- DVD sales: $15 billion.

- Movie download market: $1.6 billion.

- Subscriptions to Netflix and Blockbuster Online: $2.1 billion.

- Blu-ray: $450-500 million.
