Default Why aren't blu software sales taking off?

Well, why aren't they? Aren't people flocking to buy PS3's now? Aren't all the people who were 'sitting on the sides' running into BB and CC and getting a blu-ray player?

So why do the stats on hd-dvd vs blu-ray disks look unchanged?

Seriously, I'm curious.

I don't see any numbers here... Could you point them out?

All I see are percentages, and while the war is over, this is still about the slowest selling/buying time of the year.

If you want a detailed explanation of why HD DVD still has decent percentage numbers, then that's different...

HD DVD players are readily availabe, they are still less expensive, and the prices have been lowered even more. Movies on HD DVD have been on tremendous discount as of late, and people want to get them before they are out of stock.

Blu-ray & HD DVD sales are up from last year, but where Blu-ray had numbers at the beginning of this year (last I saw) that showed over a 100% increase in sales, HD DVD had numbers closer to a 50% increase in sales.

There is little about percentages that reflects a whole lot though, and despite the fact that HD DVD production has come to a halt, it doesn't immediately render the HD DVD players non-functional.

So, in a year, come back and ask the same question when there are no new HD DVD movies out there and there has been a full holiday season dominated by Blu-ray.

Not only will the percentages be significantly different, the actual sales figures should be up a ton from this year.

Any there any reliable sales figures that publish total volume and not just rankings/ratios?

I think this is a mentally-challenged argument.

Its the beginning of march, not necessarily the time that people are expected to flock to retail locations in droves to buy expensive tech equipment. To answer your question, this is one of the slowest retail times of the year.

People are still paying off their holiday credit card bills.

Because BD is doomed and HD-DVD will rise from the ashes. </sarcasm>

Seriously, so many factors that affect this to list, not the least of which is the country is in recession and HDM is a disposable income purchase, not a necessity for most people.

Ratio's are a tricky thing to infer 'sales' from. All they tell is that Bluray has maintained - roughly - it's % of total sales lead up against HD DVD's firesales. Whether that impresses or disappoints is completely random. Without any actual 'numbers', there's no way of telling if/how much Bluray's are or aren't taking off.

Agreed. I think the better question to the OP should be...why would sales be taking off right now?

DVD Empire's charts aren't updated any more.

Last time I looked, this chart even isn't linked from within their page. Unless you use the direct link, you won't find this page anymore.

Right now, you'll see many HD DVD owners go for the clearance sales, that's why they are so close to Blu-ray. (Hell, I'd do the same if I was in their shoes, it's a one-time opportunity!)

Maybe if you posted some actual number and not going by ratios.

HD DVD's will stop soon so people won't be able to buy them in the shop so GET THEM WHILE YOU CAN.

We have Firesales on HD DVD

I am sure sales of both formats are up on this time last year, but would be nice to have actual figures.

Quietest shopping time of the year whiel people recover from the Holiday shopping bills.

............

The picture will be very different (ratio wise) in just a few months, nevermind 6-12 months.

I'll take recession for 100 Pat!

As everyone has said, it's a very slow buying time - and, people are saving money for the summer or paying off X-Mas credit or hurting financially due to the economy.

It's not going to get much better anytime soon and there certainly won't be a major change in disc sales until these studios get their head our of their @ss and lower disc prices. No one is buying $30 discs in droves.

Why aren't BD Player prices coming down yet?

Answer that question and you'll have answered your own question as well.

anyone who wants to see a sudden surge in sales month to month at this time of year rather than viewing the increase in sales from previous years knows so little about the market and sales trends in relation to the time of year that its not even worth debating or explanation.
