Default Anyone worried about CH-DVD?

Well I am officially purple, so I have my bases covered.....however....I have heard a fair amount about the Chinese rolling out tons of cheap CH-DVD players.....which are supposed to be very similar to HD DVD?

I think I read someplace that CH-DVD was going to be launched during the summer olympics.

Anyone have any updates on CH-DVD? Could it hurt bluray?

The way I understood it, that was only for the Chinese market, so it doesn't really matter. Beyond that, if that is the case, it's probably great for Blu-ray if it takes off in the sense that it would cut down on Chinese Blu-ray piracy.

Yep... If China went Blu, then they would make a ton of knock off copies... Eventually those copies would wind up in the "paid for market"... Since you cant stop the pirating, just let them pirate it to their own incompatible format.

Do we know that CH-DVD won't be exported? I can think of much that China makes that doesn't get sent in great quantity to North America, and I suspect the rest of the western world??

You might be able to get one in Chinatown or discount shops that get supplied from China.

Its supposed to stay over there though, thats what the studios want.

The China High Definition DVD players won't be able to play any existing HD DVD pressed disc. They don't have the AVC or VC1 codecs, instead they use the Chinese AVS codec. Also, the modulation is different.

If CH-DVD takes off in China I'm sure there will be pirated CH-DVD copies of Hollywood HD movies for sale in China. (Afterall, they gotta do something with all those HD DVD printing presses.) Of course those discs won't work in HD DVD players.

Which means they won't have a negative impact on the American market. So no worries here. Well, unless they make so many that there's another shortage of diodes or something. More likely, it will lead to lower prices for blue diodes and drive transports.

You said everything I wanted to say and saved me the time of typing it. Thanks.

No. It's a China-only format.

Even if it played regular HD DVD's, how could this be a threat to blu-ray? The only movies for it will be released in China....

I really don't understand the OP question, or are you saying you think studios could suddenly start releasing CH DVD titles in places other than China? That's crazy.

I think what the Op Meant if our HD DVD players can read CH HD DVD titles then we could import titles for like $ 5or $10 heck my friend was over there last weekend and picked up like 24 dvds for no more then 60something dollars and picked me a few to and these weren't bootlegs either.

I'm not too worried about CH DVD ever winning over here, but then I taught the same of Blu-Ray, and look at it now. The only one that might make a little dent is the HD VMD, and even then, they wouldn't be able to do what CH DVD can (half the population of the world is in China). But who knows, hopefully they won't and Blu-Ray can become the defacto. (Honestly don't think so, unless they stop producing upconverting DVD players (poor souls that believe that is High Def))

No, the last time that a country tried going with a national standard (not following the international standard). The rest of the world went on it's merry way and ignore them (Japanese Cellphone systems by Docomo).

It's so funny jumping back and forth between Hi-Def and console smackdown. Same person that's saying that the PS3 have no games in console smackdown is saying that no one use use the PS3 to watch movies in Hi-def. If the red fanboy is right then 360's day will be numbered but if the 360 fanboy is right then Blu-ray is a huge success. So which is it boys?

The Chinese standard is meant for China only. It is not meant for international use. China is big enough that it can go its own way. I wouldn't be surprised if China did go blu-ray in the end though.
