Default Sales spin ends: total HD DVD standalones sold in US = 600K

http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/19/l...ence-in-tokyo/

NOTE - ORIGINAL STORY HAS BEEN CORRECTED

Quote:
Q: How many HD DVD players and recorders, exactly, did you sell?
A: 600,000 players in the US and 300,000 Xbox 360 HD DVD drives. 100,000 units were sold in Europe. And about 10,000 players and 20,000 recorders in Japan. So about 1,030,000 units worldwide.

Holy shit!

What happened to the million plus players in the U.S. alone?

That's a pathetic total and I can't see any retailer or studio missing out on so few customers. Especially considering many of them also have Blu-ray players.

300k, how much does BD have SA wise? This number is incorrect, must be a translation or confusion. Because does anyone believe Sony would not call them out for this back in Nov and early Jan? Sony fought back by including PS3s in all future press statements.

This correlates with what Jodi Sally recently said

Quote:
"I know for a fact that since we made our price move, our weekly sales are twice the rate of the weekly average that they were in 2007," Sally says.
Since Toshiba sold about 100k players in 2006 that leaves an about 200k for 2007, or an approximate average of 3,800 per week.

NPD reported sales for the week ending 1/19 (the week of the pricecuts)

Blu-ray Disc - 16,496 units
HD-DVD - 8,639 units

That is roughly double of the 2007 average. Pathetic, but true.

With such low sales Warner had enough reason to drop HD DVD even if there was no payoff. It is just amazing to me how Paramount went with HD DVD.

Tell that to OP. People are clearly not "over it" and moving forward when stuff like this comes up. If you are so forward, why click this thread about HD DVD?

I did not say I am more privy than him, nevertheless big execs have been known to make errors in statements. I just doubt the BDA would not publicly chastise the HD DVD PRG back in November, like they have done several times when something isn't accurate.

I just saw your name as the last post so I wanted if you had any spin and sure enough you did, and you did say as if it was fact that those numbers were "incorrect". It's also interesting how you had nothing to say on the other threads about Toshibas official announcement.

+1.

It's all a moot point as the war is over, but it does strike me rather odd that just as many add-ons were sold in the US as SALs. But if it's true, then at least the Blu-ray fans have something more to be happy about.

Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don't turn it off! It wasn't my war! You asked me, I didn't ask you! And I did what I had to do to win! But somebody wouldn't let us win! And I come back to the world and I see all those maggots at the airport, protesting me, spitting. Calling me baby killer and all kinds of vile crap! Who are they to protest me? Who are they? Unless they've been me and been there and know what the hell they're yelling about!

Ah yes, the bait & troll type. At least you're honest though, you specifically came here to seek me out. And you've noticed I haven't (yet) replied to any of the Toshiba announcement threads. I guess I should be flattered.

I just got on HDD recently, so still making my rounds. You can anticipate my official press statement regarding the HD DVD format, sometime today

What I read from this is that HD DVD sold a lot less players than we thought, therefore Blu-ray must have also sold a lot fewer than we thought too. Otherwise Sony would've picked up on this.

call it what you want, it just amazes me how someone with no access to actual sales data would argue the facts that the Toshiba president just said.... boys spin never ceases to surprise me....and I can't wait for your take er...official press release.

It's far more prudent not to assume, as you do not know what information I have at my disposal. I was basing my position on official press statements and information presented to the industry. The 300k figure is from a translation on engadget, if I am not mistaken. Nevertheless I'm sure Toshiba Corporation will clarify the exact figures. However not sure why you are investing so much time on this thread, perhaps you should heed your own advice and effectively 'move on.'

Regarding the bait & troll, that's exactly what it is. The pettiness of some people truly amazes me.

actually as one of the more outspoken diehards, I just wanted to see your spin...I find yours and a few others devotion quite intriging actually, and now even more so as even Toshiba has known when to throw in the towel.
