Default What's wrong with these numbers?

Transformers DVD sales - 13,000,000+

Total HDM sales for 2007 - 6,700,000

Blu-ray sales of the 2007 total - 4,000,000

HD DVD sales of the 2007 total - 2,700,000

So if I understand this correctly one title on DVD sold almost 2X more than all of the HDM sales for 2007 (blu + red combined) - BOBOs freebies and all the $10 HDM give aways included. And one title - Transformers - outsold the total of every title sold on Blu-ray in 2007 by better than 3 to 1? One DVD title?

Is there any dough in the HDM niche market?

DVD is a market at it's peak, compare like with like.

Wow looking at those number Blu-ray was really pulling ahead of HD DVD. Perhaps the reason the war is over is because it is not so much a matter of market penetration but consumer fatigue in wanting the war to end. In fact the Home Video Movie Industry wants one HDM format to over time replace the falling sales of DVD. The format war had about 2 years and well times up pencils down it looks like Blu-ray has won.

You are completely ignoring the fact that DVD did not immediately take off either... and at the moment DVD sales are *DE*creasing, while Blu-Ray sales in Jan/Feb 08 are already greater then all Blu-Ray sales for 2007, according to Lionsgate (possibly in reference to their movies only?).

Blu-Ray's growth has exploded since Warner's news. It see growth spurts every time there is major news pointing towards Blu-Ray's final victory in the format war. When Universal and Paramount finally go Blu, there will be another major growth spurt, and when Toshiba finally calls it quits officially there will be a *SIGNIFICANT* growth spurt for sure. And from that point it will continue to take off as prices come down and consumer adoption increases.

No one expects HDM sales to come even close to DVD at this stage. However last year, for the first year ever in the history of DVD, DVD sales actually fell, they fell by about 2%. The industry expects DVD sales to continue to decrease.

A big part of the decrease is that many people have bought all the back catalog movies that they want and are now only buying new releases.

That is why the industry would like to see HDM take up the slack, to make up from the 2% decrease. Industry doesn't expect HDM to suddenly outsell DVD over night, but they would like to see it gradually increase, with people switching from cheap DVD to more pricey (greater profit margin) HDM for new release and hopefully re-purchase much of their library of DVDs in HDM.

Or Cable/DSL/ISDN to dialup modems in their first year.

People who compare a format at its peak to a format that's been out for 1 year show an utter lack of critical thinking.

Hi, I'm captain obvious. Let me explain. It takes TIME for market adoption of any new format. You think DVD became popular in its first year? HDM is moving faster than DVD, which is definitely a plus. But still, it takes TIME. So stop worrying.

I know a lot of people are all saying the same thing here and pointing out how wrong you are.

So here is me jumping ontop of the pile.

I know your trying to make a point here that HDM is a tiny little market. But look at what you are actually saying. Another way you could have said that is.

"So one format that has been out for less than 2 years couldn't outsell a format that has been out for over 10 years."

Do you see now why what you are trying to say is just a little silly?

Thanks for explaining why HD DVD must die. It must die so the HDM market can flourish. Good call!

Reader's Digest Version: I support HD DVD and I'm pissed my format is dying and wish Blu-ray would too.

The format war is keeping people from jumping in. Warner executives said exactly this when they switched. Once the format war ends we'll see HDM adoption rise at a surprising pace since people are no longer afraid of making the wrong choice.

also remeber that lets say a high def disc costs 30 bucks on average so HDM sales are $200 million, and then assume transformers sells for...what? 15-18 bucks each? comes out about the same

still it is for just one dvd, but check out how many bargin bins are goign on at walmart/best buy as retailer are trying to ditch overstock
