Default Best Buy offers free HD DVD Player promo

http://news.punchjump.com/article.php?id=5548

Best Buy stores on Sun. began offering a free stand-alone HD DVD Player with the purchase of an audio system package.

In the Feb. 10 circular, customers who purchase a $899.97 Yamaha / Klipsch audio package will receive Toshiba Corp.'s HD-A3 HD DVD Player at no cost.

Best Buy is also advertising a 'Buy 1 Get 1 Free' promotion for select HD DVD titles.

The offer is the latest to spur sales of high-definition products.

This week, Amazon.com discounted 50 percent off nearly 150 HD DVD titles.

Additionally, it is offering 50% off select titles for Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray disc format.

Wal-Mart this week offered the HD-A3 HD DVD Player to online customers and subsequently sold out.

Microsoft last week discounted the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player to $129.99 from $179.99.

Blu-ray player sales recorded an 82 percent share in the week ending Jan. 27. HD DVD recorded the remaining 18 percent, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan.

Remember the huge stink HD DVD supporters raised about free players with TVs a few weeks back? I doubt we'll see them mentioning this deal if their percentages rise favorably.

As I said in the other thread on this topic

Strange combo, the A30 player only has 2 channel analog out and the Yamaha/Klipsh package doesn't have HDMI inputs. The only way to get the audio from the A30 to the Yamaha is through optical cable.

I would think a better reciever or the A35 would make it a better deal

Well if you can't sell them, give them away.

According to BestBuy's website, all the A3's are sold out. So is this going to be rainchecked? Or substituted with a different player?

Its the A30 you get free not the A3

And Xboxboi, punchjump is confusing videoscan software sales with NPD hardware sales. It has been discussed in on other threads I believe. I doesn't suprise me they still haven't caught onto their mistake yet.

Blu-Ray gives away a player with a $2000 TV = Bad
HD DVD gives away a player with a $899 audio package = Good

Makes perfect sense.

And the reverse is completely applicable as well:

Blu-Ray gives away a player with a $2000 TV = Good
HD DVD gives away a player with a $899 audio package = Bad

Makes perfect sense.

Should say, i think this is probably one of the more sensible offers HD DVD has put up lately. $900 hardware buyers might actually buy a couple of $30 movies. They're probably a better bet in a way than people hawking in (deliberately) for $100 players. And they're more likely to have the cash for a duel player down the line (to cover over concerns of buying a HD DVD catalogue).
