Finally.
Once off-branders hit $199, BD might actually pick up some momentum. Doubly so if somebody kicks Fox in the ass for their BD MSRPs.

This is great news. One of the reasons stagnation is good for the consumer. Hold your powder - prices will come down. Now if we can get back to the net $10 BOGOS life will be good.
Thank you XDE. I love competition. Or at least paranoid perceived competition. |

With a little luck the Funai players will be under $199 at retail for Christmas- that would bode well for the future of HDM! I think they will have to be under $200 to be competitive if the 350 is $299 and the 550 is $399.

Awesome! I'll price match my Costo price and save $100 and then when the S550 comes out return it for the S550 for no real out of pocket expenses.
Thanks Toshiba XDE!

This is great news, especially if it translates into equally lower prices for the Sony S550 and Samsung BD-2550. Bring on the 4th quarter sale prices!

The sweet spot for consumer electronics is sub $199. Anything above has proved to create hesitation. Drop it to $199 and the cash registers ring.

when HD DVD did that Toshiba was hemorrhaging money trying to keep HD DVD alive and oh yes there was FORMAT WAR going on that was scaring away the consumer from both formats... and contrary to the anti Blu-ray fanboys that plague the forum, the Blu-ray prices are indeed coming down!

Coming down in the sense that prices are higher than they were during the format war.

Sure it will. For those that are HDTV qualified. Meaning they at least have a HDTV.
Drop the price they will buy. Does this mean that a SDTV household is going to rush out and move to HDTV - probably not. My guess that this price drop is a result of product backing up on the docks. I've got no problem with that. Drop the price - move the gear. Not good for the CE but good for the consumer. |
