Default HD-DVD addon - 10 euro ($15) new from Amazon.de

Even though I think its still not worth it, I'm sure many Euros here might be interested.

Personally I'm amused =)

Cheers! I've bought one for a laugh - makes a nice memento of the format war and also means I might be able to pick up some dirt cheap discs in the near future.

Of course, that's a qualification for being a fanboy.

Good thing about free market is every commodity eventually settles on the price the consumers are willing to pay. That's how much the add on is worth.

You, of course, being well-versed in what qualifications are prerequisite for the job. Hell you'd make a great head of HR, what with your extensive experience.

Incorrect, I bought into your Blu-ray dream months ago (try December) but at the same time I didn't shun HD DVD because my eyes weren't suddenly and unceremoniously glued shut by the hype courtesy of the BDA and Sony themselves.

You can take your matter of fact rubbish and stick it in a cold, dark place.

I don't know what posts you've been reading but my positions are anti-Sony (which had the tendency to give me a pro HD DVD/MS slant), exhibiting and practicing honesty and objectivity when evaluating lossy audio when compared to lossless and the proliferation of high def content on HDM.

You see, sounding so embittered about BD whilst maintaining the 'I own it so..' stance just spells out your poor convictions on the issue. To make out you've never attacked BD as a format nor cheerlead HD-DVD is a lie. Though most of my perception of you is built on the support you give/gave to the more overt HD-DVD fanboys. More intelligent fanboism, less pronounced, way more irksome. Of course the reason for it might be wierd Sony hatred, but the end result is the same if your objectivity entails picking the most slanted view capable of spreading vitriol.

Far more reasonable is my position that an inferior player for a dead format isn't worth 10 euros with the true expense building the collection of obselete, still costly discs. I wouldn't have it hooked up day-to-day and neither will anyone with any HD-DVD player past 2009. Thats old post-CES spin nonsense.

Certainly many felt it was worth it though, hitting #1 and now cleared-out. Which is why I posted it here and elsewhere.

Lol, not really. I was always a pragmatist rather than a fanboy - I supported blu-ray as it was the likely winner and offered higher capacity and bandwidth than HD DVD. It did feel strange rooting for the format with region coding though.

Anyway, the HD DVD add-on has cost me £13, which is about the price of a Saturday cab fare home and it will work fine with my iMac or HTPC (when finished). It's be a fun toy and I've already purchased 3 titles (HPaTOOTP, Skeleton Key, Good Shepherd) at less than the cost of a rental each. Can't really go wrong.

If I could find a way of multi-regioning a Tosh standalone, I'd buy one of them to replace my Denon upscaler as it has a sync issue.

if anything it makes a good DVD backup drive for $10. A regular DVD backup would cost more it seems.

Great price on the add-on though. I'd pick up one for $20 or so here, but I think they are still $50 at Best Buy (they have mountains of them).

You might want to fumble around on AVS in the HD DVD Hardware forum. I'm pretty certain that some folks have posted firmware that makes the Toshiba's region free (corrections welcome).

rofl

The only problem is, now we're going to have people demanding/expecting blu-ray to be cheap.

"pffft u guyz, I'll get a blu-ray player when they have a profile 9.3 for $43, but never until then!!! also my hd-dvd's didn't self-ignite!! "

Just because I've pulled for HD DVD's (apparent) pros and highlighted Blu-ray's cons in the past does not make me embittered. These are called preferences and I detest Sony with a passion so said cons will have the tendency to be addressed more loudly. The fact that this player is so versatile (360 or the PC) and plays 200+ exclusive movies is why I took issue with your "value" assessment. And in spite of the obsolescence, both Buffalo and Plextor announced combo PC drives, thereby increasing the value of these HD DVD discs you've come to loathe.
