Default Blu-ray Player Prices Hit 2008 Highs As Competition Dwindles

Apparently these companies don't care about delivering affordable high def content. Prices are going up instead of down. I guess thats how monopolies work IMO raising prices at this point might actually do a lot to hurt the format.

EDITED: only mentioned sony now this seems more reasonable

You mean the monopoly of Pioneer, Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, Denon, Philips and the likes? So, how many companies make a monopoly again? However, this is just because companies don't like to lose money or do you think Toshiba made its one billion loss out of nothing? Prices will come down till the end of the year, don't worry.

It's up to them to price however they want. If they want Blu-Ray to remain a niche, they'll keep prices high. Otherwise at some point they will have to drop prices to compete with DVD. It's really up to the individual companies, and I'm sure it all fits into their business strategy somehow. The point is that you don't have to buy anything if you don't like the price. Personally I am waiting until prices drop quite a bit more before jumping to Blu, so that's one customer they won't be getting at these levels.

As I said in the other thread in the main smackdown section, it's called inflation and it is caused by a weak US dollar.

Tom's hardware was exposed with biased benchmarks (nvidia payoffs) way back before they got really big, and they recently suggested consumers to buy , so there goes their credibility.

As the buying season slows down the prices go up. I used to work in retail and it's just the way it is. It is to compensate for moving fewer units.

Doesn't it work the other way around? High prices --> less units sold, not less units sold --> high prices? In any case it's obvious that they're not bothering to push too much now. Probably waiting for Profile 2.0, and/or the US rebate checks, and/or a more traditional time of year to push sales.

It was in 1999 or 2000 or sometime around that date. Their benchmarks were biased towards nvidia.

Should we call it a cartel or oligopoly?
