I'd rather poke my eyes out with a rusty fork than own a standalone. Standalones are for NOOBS.

You need AnyDVD HD. If you look around the Internet, you can get it for free but I won't tell you where to look. It normally costs 79 Euros, which is $116.

You will also need the proper version of PowerDVD to watch a high def disc or rip. This costs $100, but as I said you can get it for free if you're resourceful.

Not $100 if you can figure out how to get it free.

You do realize that the $100 for the software ALSO plays BD's AND HD DVD's, right? How much does a combo standalone player cost you? Hmmmm......

Who said I was glorifying it? I'm a poor college student. So yeah. I have a Mac and don't have any of this software to begin with, but I know about it. I am far more likely to buy another stand alone when they get cheap enough than to bother with the add-on/rip/burn to BD process since that would probably be very expensive. A BD burner plus BD media is pretty damn expensive right now compared to regular DVD burning. Heck, blank DVD DL discs are still pretty expensive. Good for backing up 8 gigs of data at a time, but probably not worth the price.

This logic is incomplete. $130 for the add-on, plus however much for an external Blu-ray computer drive, plus $100 for playback software. Probably a total somewhere in the $400ish range. Cheaper than the combo players, but probably not worth it unless you have your computer hooked up to a big HDTV.
