Default upconversions for pcs???

Why do they not have upconversions for laptops and pcs so that dvds can play at a higher resolution??? That would be something nice or is there something I don't know?

Any DVD player I have used on the computer like Windows Media Player, WinDVD, PowerDVD, Media Player Classic, etc have upconverted DVDs to the resolution your desktop is set at, so if your desktop is at 1920x1080 like mine, the DVDs will upconvert to 1920x1080. If it wasn't upconverting, it would make your monitor change to 720x480 to play.

That's on a normal computer but I don't think laptops would be any different.

Actually thats partially right. That is true if your DVD is playing in full screen mode rather than in a window. One thing about computer monitors is that not everything has to play in full screen mode and therefore if it does not use up all the pixels it will not automatically be converting to the native resolution ur computer is set at.

Yeah I was assuming that most people play DVDs in full screen on their computer. I realize that the players mostly start up in a window but Alt+Enter will usually make the player fullscreen or some other key combination. If the player can go fullscreen, and your monitor is not set to 720x480, then it is upconverting the image.

Right but keep in mind too, many DVDs are widescreen, and I hope everyone here buys widescreen dvds if and when they do buy them. And even though DVD doesnt lose resolution quality on widescreen movies, the source is still 480i/p and when being upconverted on the PC, it doesnt use all the lines that the monitor is capable of. Unless it is a widescreen monitor that is a true 16x9 aspect ratio and is a 16x9 movie. (Please anybody correct me if im wrong but I am pretty sure im right).

Right, when I said full screen I just mean filling the screen whether with all picture or picture and black bars, as long as you have a resolution of 1024x768, you won't lose any picture data and the video will be upscaling to that resolution.
