Hi-Vision/Muse was never officially available in North America...so I don't have any experience with it at all. It was based on a funky, analog, 1035i Japanese high definition standard developed by NHK. Wikipedia has a great laserdisc article about laserdiscs that's worth a read.

thanks for the links daybreaker, I cannot remember pricing at the time I saw the demo, but between the display and player it was pretty much a "if you have to ask..."

I have seven players, three of which are currently hooked up in different rooms and a little over 300 discs. I still pick up movies here and there but at this point I prefer to buy them in lots than individually. Saves on the shipping costs.
Laserdiscs are still my favorite medium. Not sure why that is.

Laserdiscs
This is my second post. I am also one of those few laserdiscs faithful left! I have easily over 300 LD's. I also have 95% of the DTS LD's manufactured. Here is some trivia Clear And Present Danger was the first AC-3 LD released. I have three LD players: CLD-D704, CLD-97 and CLD-99. IMHO the best LD player ever is the HLD-X9. It is the closest LD player PQ to a DVD PQ IMHO! My Elites CLD-97 and 99 do NOT even come close the X9 PQ folks! The X9 MSRP: $4500! That is why it was such a good unit! BTW I couldn't afford such a player!
Another "exotic" player like the X9 is HLD-X0. Both are HD Muse LD players. -

Why in god's name do any of you still collect a sub-standard format compared to today's high-def format?
I guess this explains format wars. People more loyal to the type of disk a movie is on then the best possible version of the movie itself?
I mean it's hard for me to watch a dvd version of a movie i know i could see in much better resolution in high-def... can't imagine waiting a few hours out of a day to watch a laser disk.Blu-rays: 350
Steel Books: 15
Players: PS3 Slim, Samsung BD-P1500
Sound: Onkyo TX-SR674S / SKS-HT240
TV: 65" plasma, TC-P65V10 -

Because if I want to watch Song of the South on anything besides VHS I have to have my LD copy (don't hold your breath on the BD release) There are still MANY movies that the releases on LD are STILL the best way to watch a film. Hell when Lucas finally released the unaltered Star Wars discs a year or so ago they were EXACTLY the same as the LD versions...that I have had for almost a decade

Do people still spend thousands of dollars on record players?
Oh yeah, they do!
I love LD! 120 plus discs and 3 players in use with 3 more in storage.
I also love DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray. I also have 1000+ VHS I don't love them but about 250 of them are widescreen and several of the 1.33:1 are OAR so they are fine.
