Default 300gb DVD

Hitachi Maxell Ltd. this week plans to demonstrate a 300GB version of a holographic optical disc that will be available to select customers in the entertainment industry beginning next month.

InPhase Technologies Inc., which was spun off from Bell Laboratories in 2000, is producing the holographic disc -- called the Tapestry HDS-300R. The launch of the product to a limited number of customers next month will be followed by a general product release in the first quarter of 2007 aimed at enterprise-class users.

The technology seems similar to VMD, which also offers a holographic disc but is currently capped at 40GB.

This is nothing compared to the protein coated disk, which is capable of 50 TB

Well forget Blu-Ray and HD-DVD then, that's what I'm waiting for!

Unfortunately, there's always something better around the corner...

50 TB...dang... still sounds very theoretical and technology that is still in the testing/theoretical stages take at least another 5+ years to commercial stages.

Very interesting technology...sounds like its way ahead of its time...but I wonder how they can get the protein disc to last more than several years... sounds like they still need to figure a way to get the bacterium to live longer.

Sounds like a good technology for backing up of servers...

Optical discs have no future!
They are to fragile unless there is no scratch-proof case like Blu-Ray discs supposed to have in the beginning.

3.9 TB storage for HVD is what I read. Unfortunately each disc costs about $120-$180 to make, and the players cost about the same price as a new Honda Civic. But still... I want one.

But that brings up an interesting question... At what point is movie playback technology sufficiently advanced to not need a replacement? Hmmm... I think I'll start a new thread.
