in any case, where do people read reviews of these discs?

I have been a supporter (i.e. buyer) of both formats for several years now. High fidelity review - as mentioned below - is a good place for reviews, bearing in mind that most new releases are jazz or classical now (which I'm not especially into myself).

If you are in Europe, check out play.com as they have SACD and DVD-A sections which are quite good.

The Genesis remasters are generating good buzz in high fi circles at the moment as are the Depeche Mode remasters.

Other sites which I used to frequent (more for the reviews than to buy, admittedly) are acousticsounds and dvd4music.com.

Default SACD and DVD-A

Hi,

DVD-A has almost no releases this year and last year they were few like "The Doors Perception Box" and "Beatles Love" and neither did actually sell that well. They we aimed for the generation that was born just after the 2nd World War, I guess. I've got them, however. The Doors, Talking Heards, Yes, Chicago and even Robert Cray are very good on DVD-A.

Most DVD-A's were pop or rock music and fairly good. Those that I mentioned above, are excellent.

SACD has a classical music profile. 95% of all issues are of that genre and they are multichannel acoustical recordings in real concert hall environment providing typically will excellent fidelity. This is why I buy SACDs today.

Genesis SACD issues are not that good, they say. Compression and high frequency boosting has been applied to make the recordings more sexy. DVD-A never did that error when mixing the records for the second time.

Warner was the biggest supporter of DVD-A and now they don't take side. They want to play safe this time.

br,

I don't know what you mean by "Perception" and "Love" didn't sell well. I believe "Perception" sold its entire initial run of either 10,000 or 20,000 and was considered a success while "Love" was the best selling DVD-A ever. I can see how you could still state they didn't sell well if compared to MP3 and even CD. I believe only Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" SACD was a bigger seller in high resolution surround than "Love" but sales of individual titles is hard to pin down.

I think SACD/DVD-A suffered by having two just as Blu-ray/HD DVD suffers because two formats exist. I own and play all 4 formats but firmly believe things would have been much better if only SACD and Blu-ray ever saw the light of day. Of course the same would be true if only DVD-A and HD DVD had launched and SACD and Blu-ray had been aborted rather than launched.

My favourite DVD-A was LA Woman, by the Doors. Riders on the Storm was excellent. I wish these formats had gotten a better look-see from A/V supporters.

Hmm .. I have a 1.2a receiver and able to play multi channel SACD using PS3.

Audio from a Super Audio CD cannot be output from the digital out (optical) connector. Multi-channel content from Super Audio CDs can only be output from the HDMI OUT connector.

The Elton John SACD's and Billy Joel's The Stranger are excellent.

All the Depeche Mode remasters are spot on and absolutely brilliant, but you have to get the UK versions or you don't get the SACD hybrid. The US version only has DTS 24/96 and it pails in comparison to the SACD multi-channel mix.

i disagree with that; although it might be true for Trick and Wuthering, Duke and Abacab are both excellent.

the next set, 1983-1998, comes out in September, then in March 2008 the PG albums come out.

Some receivers (including some of Sony's 2006 models, I gather) support hi-res PCM via HDMI (as the PS3 outputs; so far it will not do DSD output) but only 2-channel.

There's an (incomplete) overview of receivers that do support multichannel PCM via HDMI in the FAQ at PS3SACD.com.

As for my favourite SACD titles: Depeche Mode's Violator, Music for the Masses and Some Great Reward top my list. Other favourites include:
- Paul van Dyk: Reflections
- Jeff Wayne's musical version of War of the Worlds
- Roxy Music - Avalon
- Bryan Ferry - Boys and Girls
- Guano Apes - Don't call me names
