Lightbulb HD Downloads

This topic will not go away, now Netflix is moving in:

"Online DVD-rental pioneer Netflix Inc. and LG Electronics said Thursday that they're developing a set-top box that will allow consumers to stream movies and other content directly from the Web to their high-definition TVs. It's a move that could put new pressure on the already-declining DVD market."

"Among the possible consequences of the Netflix-LG alliance is that some consumers will see one less reason to buy DVDs. In the first six months of 2007, DVD sales dropped 12.5% from the year-earlier period, according to data from the research firm Global Media Intelligent. "

Got this off of the Marketwatch site, but you can google Netflix news and probably find it.

I am all for downloads, and with the amount of bootlegged DVD's flying around, it is time to move on, the studio's are losing their shirts on DVD's, and will continue to lose their shirts on Blu-Ray, and HD-DVD. They must get control of their product, and once they figure out how to make it mobile (Secure USB Key) for Autos, laptops, etc... then we can finally be done with this so called format war, and you can sell your Blu-ray, and HD-DVD disc alongside of your Laserdisc!

Its all great, BUT, the US infrastructure cannot support this type of service as things stand today. If FIOS were in every home OK, but not now.

I think the infrastructure can definately support it, there is no reason why it can't.

Come on. Why shouldn't this work? It's already in use in Europe and European DSL/Cable isn't better than US DSL/Cable, is it?

But I'd never sell my DVD,VHS,HD-DVD or Blu-Ray stuff for it. I really like physical media and don't see the point why to pay that much for only a download.

The music collection that I have that used to take up the side of a wall in my basement can now fit in the palm of my hand. I can hear my kids now asking me "Daddy what was HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray?". I think this will happen sooner then what we think.

And for those who don't backup their hard drives = complete loss of your movie collection in the event of a drive failure.

I understand the convenience of having downloadable movies, but I'll always opt for the movie on physical media I can store on a shelf. I guess I am "old fashioned".

Thumbs up Both!

A lot of people like buying the physical, tangible disc because, as with music, there is artwork and information on or in the DVD or BD case.

I also agree about needing to either back-up your hard drive movies or risk losing them.

People still buy books. People still buy CDs (kind of, lol). I believe there is room for digital download sales in the market alongside the physical unit sales. I highly doubt digital downloads will ever be the only way of buying movies (and music).
