I'm not. I do need a VHS/DVD combo player for my office but I'm not spending $250 on one. And VHS upconverted to HD is pointless. Isn't VHS res considered 320x240???

it doesn't upconvert VHS... you can re-record your VHS onto DVD and THEN it'll upconvert but look like shit.

That was true of Analog but not entirely true for Digital. As long as the digital video is not being re-compressed, it will be a true 100% duplicate copy since there is no generational loss when dealing with 1s and 0s.

On a side note, I recommend that people backup their VHS tapes (esp home videos) to DVD since time has its effect on tape after so many years.

nah i wouldn't do that... even my 8 track tapes still work and sound great... you just have to know how to splice tape and fix head jams... analog all the way... well for older movies... it just brings you back to the essence of the days where everyone talked like either bill and ted or mr. wizard. back when people used to play stick ball.

JVC's Website actually confirms what BB say's about upconverting both dvd and vhs to either 1080i/720p playing both formats threw the hdmi cable.

I just gave away my last VHS/DVD progressive. The only VHS tapes I even own are the ones I made in my High School TV class. And I'm in no rush to transfer my “what are you doing for summer vacation” interviews to HD DVD, well not yet anyway.

BTW: Where is the point in upconverting regular VHS tapes to 720p or even 1080i? I can imagine they are "blurrier than blurrier" then. There's just more needed than just upconverting a Video. You'd also need some proper algorithms to get more detail into it (interpolation, sharpening and so on.)

I bought the Samsung DVD Recorder/VCR so I can transfer all of my home movies before it is too late.

I have done that, and was quite surprised how poor some of my tapes looked. I have had some success with restoration, however.

Someone mentioned splicing of tape. This would not be practical for VHS, IMO. I have tried spicing tape, but the splice is always visible during playback. The major reason, however, for preserving your VHS recordings on DVD is that I have seen color actually diminish on my recordings.

I've only looked at one of my conversions since I got my HiDef, but it looked decent enough. (About what you'd expect, it looked like a VHS recording...)

I plan to do it pretty soon. Too much of my childhood is on vhs...not just home movies but old tv shows and commercials that I recorded from the late 80s early 90s that I've yet to see make it to youtube or any video site. Once their gone, their gone.

Yeah, if you got some of the chips that have some awesome dithering algorithms, you could maybe get DVD quality almost out of VHS. If you have an upconverting AV receiver, why bother with this? Plug in the VCR and have it upconvert.
