Yeah, they definitely exist. Any decent torrent site has all three in either WMV HD or .mkv format (which if you do a quick search on HDD forums or google you can find a conversion guide for playing back on an or ).

Also, I should add that the PQ for these downloads is reported by forum users at a couple sites I looked at before responding to your post. Most of the posts indicate that while its a slight step up from the upscaled extended edition DVDs, it is not quite what you may have come to expect from or , so don't get your hopes up too high. (FYI, some people have reported the PQ as "superb," but I generally tend to believe the least positive reports because J6P thinks that upscaled DVDs look superb. I have not personally seen them, so I cannot say anything more than what I have read).

Either way, downloading these torrents would be illegal because since these films have not come out on HDM yet, there is no "legitimate" excuse that you were backing up films you already own.

As it stands, I am not advising you to illegally download movie. But they are out there and not too difficult to find.

I have seen the files around in .avi, .mkv and .ts although I have not viewed the .ts files. A friend actually had them and I don't know how he got them. Nor do I wish to know. The .avi and the .mkv look a lot better then the DVD's. I have watched the DVD's in the up converting players and was not very satisfied with it after viewing them in 720p. So I will wait for the Blu-Rays before watching them again.

I have these in avi, listed as 720P and are the Extended editions. I don't think they offer much improvement over the EE 4-disk versions. There's additional detail there, I just don't see it because I have a 42" screen and it's a wide movie. I sit close, 5'... still not a big difference. Anyone know the source of these files?

Best part about them is you don't have to get up to put in the second disc.

I know the wait for these movies to come to Blu-ray will most definitely be worth it. I cant wait.

I personally saw these files and they're definitely not as nice as one would expect. I don't like upscaled dvd so much, and I was quite disapointed.
No way near quality, so save yourself the (quite massive) download and let's hope for a quick (but not rushed) release of the movies...

I have the Star Wars films in WMV HD and they are amazing. I was hoping the LOTR films were the same.

I anxiously await the Blu-rays.......I will not watch them again until that time. I've seen them WAY too many times anyways. Kinda wish I saved some viewings for the HD experience...

There are many different HDTV ripped versions of these movies. The best being a spliced special edition of all three movies. Essentially someone went to the trouble of upscaling and editing the SE DVDs and the 1080i TV rips and re-encoding them in XVid. At the time they were great, bit looking at them now they utterly pale next to what Blu Ray has to offer.

The MP4 Star Wars rips however are absolutely worth seeking out. A New Hope is a sight to behold in 1080p.
