I thought people gave up on adding more channels back when we realized that going beyond 5.1 was essentially pointless?

Besides, who was stupid enough to call it the "Double-0" line *and* end all the model numbers with "007"? That's practically begging a lawsuit from the folks behind James Bond. Don't worry about MGM's financial troubles; seems Onkyo's about to pay for Bond 23.

Upper Left Front and Upper Right Front - at an angle to the normal L & R speakers, not just directly above.

The last place you want to screw around with sound placement is the front stage for movies.

yeah we just got these guys in at work. Still cant see the reasoning behind 9.2. However, i do agree with the earlier comment about the .2 being nice.
We also received the 607, 707, & 807.

This receiver seems to be aimed directly at competing against the Denon AVR-4810CI (which is a 9.3 channel receiver).

See- I just renovated my basement and installed the wiring for 9.1 ... now which receiver do I choose ....?

The Denon is HDMI 1.4 compliant, supports more subs and does network streaming as well ... but I know the Onkyo will be a better choice as far as cost efficiency goes....

I know 9 channels is overkill-- but I was renovating this room anyway so I figured I might as well install the wiring / mounts while I'm at it. I know it's far from future-proof... but who knows-I may enjoy it.

I don't completely agree that anything over 5 channels is overkill. the additional two channels in the back helps smooth out the surround activity, especially for panning effects. It also helps in the aspect of audio imagery for those will less than ideal speaker placement, too. If you cannot get your side surrounds to be even, the sound imagery will feel even more off with a tradition 5.1 set up compared to a 7.1 set up. I do agree that with a quality and careful placement of 5 channels, it makes 7 channels much less necessary.

As far as 9 channels, maybe that's just pushing it a bit... The extra 'height' speakers might be useful, but as long as it took for 6 and 7 channels to become discretely put into audio tracks, I can't imagine how long it will take for the 9 channels will take to become discrete, if ever.

I like the 9.2 of Onkyo and LOVE the 11.2 of Yamaha, but don't wanna blow $4k on a receiver; Have 6.1 now, will eventually upgrade to 6.2 (has a 2d SW output), then 7.2, then + 2 more SW for 7.4...really like the Onkyo 807 NETWORK capability, though...easy to split the MONO SW output from 1 to 2 or 2 to 4...
