Default 87 Percent of PS3 Owners Watch Blu-ray Movies

While as recently as last year NPD polls showed that 60% of PS3 owners didn’t know about its Blu-ray capabilities, the Entertainment Merchants Association revealed recently that the Playstation 3 is the driving force behind Blu-ray sales.

I've always known about them but I haven't used my PS3 to watch a BD in over a year and a half. The PS3 would be my last choice to use to watch a BD.

When I bought my PS3 over a year ago it was my main intent to watch Blu Ray movies on it. Several other people I know did the same thing.

It appears that the data you are quoting is coming from 2007 (?):

I don't think the number is anywhere near 87% for viewing on a regular basis, but it seems ludicrous that 60% wouldn't know about the BD drive inside of it either.

I could easily see over half the people using their PS3 regularly for BD playback.

I got mine on day one and have maybe played 10 hours in games on it with hundreds of hours of movies. Still, those Panasonics are calling to me.

I find these polls ultimately pretty meaningless. I think they can be worded / twisted to say whatever the people conducting them want to hear.

BDs only here. I was enjoying LBP on it earlier in the year and I'm certainly not against playing a really good PS3 exclusive such as God of War. Definitely looking forward to that. But I think the thing plays Blu-rays almost flawlessly. My only complaint would be that it doesn't bitstream HD audio. Probably couldn't tell the difference regardless but I would still love to see my receiver reading DTS-HD MA on the front.

same here... has certainly been a benefit for compatability... not having to deal with the different bd profiles etc...
have played games on my ps3 like a total of 3 hours in 3 years....

vs at least 3 bd's a week.... sometimes way more with season marathons etc

I own a 360, but got sick of the terrible baseball game (MLB 2k) available for the system, so I basically bought a PS3 for MLB The Show. But it turns out the PS3 is also a much better blu-ray player than the stand alone I had, so I was able to sell it. In short, I really love that PS3, great games and it doesn't Red Ring on me either, big plus!

rentals for bd is becoming more and more prevalent at local B and M stores, blockbuster, hollywood video, etc...so I wouldn't be surprised that some gamers on renting a game might come across a bd they want to see, i.e. transformers.

ps3

I bought my PS3 to watch Blu-ray movies.

I have about 5 games (love the Lego games!), 2 x Singstar games (Abba - Waaaaaaaaaaaaterloo!) with wireless mics (great for parties!) and about 30 movies.

I don't feel the need to upgrade to a standalone player.
