Although I'm not at liberty to post the details (please don't email to ask; I won't respond), I've heard that there is a bootleg firmware available for one recently-released Blu-ray player that will allegedly hack it for region-free playback at no extra expense. I have not actually tried this firmware myself. Again, this modification is not authorized by the manufacturer, and will void the warranty. Attempt it at your own risk.
Instead of emailing Josh Z just check the thread for the Oppo BDP-83 as I am reasonably sure that this is the player he is referring to.

Wow, I had no idea about the IMAX issue. Does anyone know what the one in the Ontario Mills mall is or what the screen size is there?

If it's in a mall, and was built in the last few years, it's most likely a digital IMAX theater.

It wasn't me that said that.

T2 Skynet spec has 6.1 DTS Master Audio but it's really only a 5.1 config with 6th channel matrix....now I feel totally ripped off having paid $20 for it...

$10 extra bucks for all that BDJava crap...

There's really no audible difference between a matrixed center back channel and a discrete one. The track is still lossless, which is an improvement over the original Blu-ray.

loading region B firmware on certain players can also "make" a region B player.
I have an early Sharp player that has had region B firmware installed, and I also get native 50hz playback because the Sharp offered both 50hz and 60hz playback--as it was meant to be used all around the world based on firmware.
so I can watch all my region B PAL discs also in upscaled 1080p.
(having a Kuro capable of outputting native 50hz completes the package nicely)
one of the best solutions bar none imo for obtaining the "holy grail" of region freedom for all your bd needs.
you can find these players at auction sites or on ebay for under $100 sometimes.
not bad at all.
(thanks to an HDD member who made it all happen)
region free--THE ONLY WAY TO BE!

We have two (IMAX theaters) in Utah listed per Lee's link (thanks Lee) and they are both real

I find the whole "DMR" process very disturbing...

I think there's some confusion as to "real" vs. "fake" IMAX. It appears some define any IMAX with digital projection as "fake"; however, the original complaint was more about screen size.

That's the problem here in Little Rock; the only commercial IMAX theater in town (Dickinson Chenal 9) is claimed as "real" by some and "fake" by others. The reason: It uses digital projection, like the "fakes" (aka "IMAX Digital")--but it's also a full-sized, multi-story IMAX screen that towers above the others in that multiplex, unlike AMC's normal-sized "IMAX" screens that started the whole debate. (The non-commercial IMAX here, at the Aerospace Education Center, is unquestionably "real"; it was built in the mid-1990's and uses 70mm film.)

IMAX's DMR technology is exactly what damaged the 35mm portions of the Dark Knight transfer to Blu-ray. Naturally, however, the IMAX portions looked insanely good.

There is no confusion. IMAX stands for Image MAXimum. 15/70 film format on a 1.44 AR screen.

Anything else is just a pimping of the name IMAX. No 15/70mm film - no IMAX theater.
