I like the overall aspect of this article, but would've found it nice if there were specific prices for low-priced sound systems, receivers, and TVs. Or a price range people could expect to pay for a certain system or receiver.

So I want to buy my first "higher end" receiver tomorrow and I decided to go with the Yamaha HTR 6250. It can decode the HD audio and upconverts the picture. Is there anything else important that I should be looking at? I'm a newb in the HD world and I just got my HD TV and Blu ray around Christmas. Also, I'm having trouble finding reviews of the receiver as it's fairly new so any help would be appreciated.

P.S Where can I find the THD of the receiver?

I Demand a Sticky!

I'd actually thought about starting an article like this a few weeks back, so I'm glad to see someone did something like this. I'd love for this to be stickied, with the OP updating the First thread each time a new article is released. Comments would obviously then go after that. Either way, a great article and hopefully the start of many great posts.

same opinion from me, I would hope that they can give a pricing for all of those. I am also looking to upgrade my Receiver to an HD one soon.

never fall in love with something you can’t afford
I think it's pretty simple: If you don't have the money to pay for it up front, you shouldn't buy it. There's no need to try and "bend," because that's how creditors/banks make the money that they shouldn't make.

Bottom line: You can't afford it, you can't buy it. You can fall in love with something you can't afford as long as you don't but it.

yeah, there's a lot of stuff I'm in love with right now that I'm not buying It's sad but it's a fact of life.

It kind of sucks for renters as they don't get the best part of HT which is the subwoofer. I think two good mains and a kick-ass sub is miles ahead of a 5.0/.1 setup with a weak or no sub.

Surrounds are cool but there is nothing like having the room being pressurized and feeling the action in your gut.

This article was a great idea. I already bought my home theater set up months ago and I am glad that I followed all the steps of this article with out being able to read it until now.

that's really the way i built my system, most bang for the buck. worked out wonderfully!

this article has some funny truisms for me. i live somewhat-above my landlord. my home theatre room is above the carport, with the landlord being attached on my further away rooms. i'm 28, but every one of my neighbors in this building (semi-below landlord, 1 downstairs neighbor who is beneath my same floor neighbor) are older. the youngest is mid 50's, while the other 3 residents are all in their late 60s to late 70's.

let's just say that it's perfect. not a single complaint, and i can rock this shit as loud as i want.

Thanks for the recommendation of the Harmony remotes. I've always found universal remotes a little bit of a pain (Im lazy) because I had to push extra buttons just to control another device. I had no idea that they had remotes that can turn everything on and set it to the right channel on the TV & Receiver. I have a bunch of equipment and my wife gets upset when she wants to use a particuliar item because she has no idea what channel to set it to on the TV & Receiver. It was easy to setup online and it knew each items' settings such as what Input channels it has.
