Holy S**t my subwoofer caught on fire!
Well, I purchased a little Def Tech 800 Sub for my living room the other day. It's been performing great, that is until I got home yesterday! I heard a buzzing sound coming from the speaker so I unplugged it and checked all the connections. I then plugged it back it and went to plug the subwoofer cable back in. To my astonishment the subwoofer started smoking and getting extremely hot!!! I quickly unplugged it to avoid seeing what would have happened if I left it alone. Anyways, that puppy is going back today and I thought I would share this crazy story. Any ideas???

That's pretty crazy. Hopefully they don't say you damaged it.

That happened to me with a receiver once. Bummer. Sounds like it could have been much worse, glad that it wasn't.

Just got back from Best Buy, exchanged it for a Mirage S8. We'll see if I like that sub or not. I want to use my Best Buy card otherwise I would buy a smaller HSU. I am hesitant to try another Def Tech 800 but I might be "forced" into it.
Crazz, that was a very degrading comment and I expect an apology on my desk by the end of the day.My Home Theater

GV:
You didn't mention anything about your electrical breaker popping at the time of your meltdown. I would have thought that a short circuit big enough to create smoke would have popped the breaker. You might want to check that breaker. -

Sounds like a fried amp. Never had it happen to me, but I have heard of it happening before on subs.
