Default Good News for plasma fans!

    http://hdguru.com/panasonic-tcp50g10...ma-review/416/

It looks like panasonic will be picking up where the Kuro left off, now hopefully they will continue to make and develop these things for many years.

Interesting, but very disappointing about the 48hz mode.
I mean I don't want to watch in 60hz at all.
    I want the true 24p.
why in the world does it have this apparent problem that makes it "unwatchable"?
anyway, hopefully Panny continues to improve.
Unfortunately I'm not convinced Panny won't pull the plug on their plasmas also in the next year or so.
color me pessimistic, but I just have a bad feeling.

hopefully with this new "greener" plasma sales people will stop using that argument to get people to buy LCD's and with Pioneer out of the market people looking for a high quality picture will go for the panasonic. I just hope its enough to keep them developing the technology.

I wish they would of elaborated more on the problems with the 48Hz mode. and if they were having the same problems with last years model why would they not fix it on their new uber model??

    I agree.
It would have been better for Panasonic to just make the display 60HZ only or charge an extra $300 or $500 and make the display have 72HZ or 96HZ mode for 1080p/24. With 1080P LCD screens gaining ground over plasma and a select few 5:5 pulldown LCD screens under $1,000, having a 48HZ unwatchable flicker mode is not wise for Panasonic. Once the Pioneers are gone I would perfer getting the Sony XBR8 or a LCOS Front Projector.

Well on last years there was a good amount of flicker with 24p sources. Some people said it was like watching a strobe effect, others said the flicker was barely noticable.

I am really surprised Panny didn't fix this as it was pretty much the only flaw with those sets.

I'm more of a Kuro fan than a Plasma fan...until another manufacturer can match Kuro PQ.

    from this review
    http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-t...mncol;txt#perf
"...It's worth noting that the step-up V10 series refreshes at 96Hz, according to Panasonic, so the flicker shouldn't be a problem on those sets. "

It looks like if you want 96Hz you have to step up to the higher end V10 model

I guess it depends on which aspect of PQ you are looking for, in some areas this set is better than the Kuro in others it falls a little short, mostly in terms of black levels. From the review is sounds like the panasonic has a better compromise with having not quite as dark blacks but has better shadow detail than the pioneer, better white level and color uniformity.
Another important thing is the brightness of this set, for many people with bright viewing rooms, plasma was never an option, hopefully this set will change that.
It's not perfect but it seems like a huge step in the right direction, just when I had feared that plasma was all but dead.

Hopefully Panasonic will one day do away with 48HZ and only make 72HZ or higher plasmas. Also the CNET review you mention confirms the flicker problem at 48HZ. Front Projectors at 48HZ do not have a unwatchable flicker since they have a lot less brighter screen that is viewed in a dark room.

"The company also includes a "24p direct in" setting that's available when the TV detects a 1080p/24 source, typically from a Blu-ray Disc. As with the PZ800U and 850U models from last year, choosing the "48Hz" setting, as opposed to the standard 60Hz setting, causes the display to refresh at 48Hz to match the 24fps cadence of film. And as with last year's sets, selecting 48Hz on the G10 causes flicker--more intense in brighter areas, but visible pretty much constantly--that basically renders the image unwatchable. We don't expect any of the videophiles toward whom this setting is aimed to stand for the flicker, so we kept the G10 set to 60Hz."

Let me see if I got this right. Having the television’s hz divisible by 24 will reduce the jutter correct? But even if the numbers match up evenly, wouldn’t having your hz several times faster than the original content cause that hyper smooth, tv like quality? I once saw Transformers on a large LCD at Best Buy and some sort of process was going on that was increasing the number of frames per second and it ceased to look like a movie, but rather a television broadcast. Yes it was smooth but it didn’t look like film anymore. I couldn’t watch it.

If you use Auto Motion Plus or whatever your TV calls it to interpolate frames then yes. If you turn it off it just repeats every frame 5 times (120HZ).

I thought it was well known that the Kuro IP was moving to panny.... What refresh rate are current pannys, aren't they the ones with the flicker issues in 24fps mode? 48Hz sounds like it should match the theater, so off hand I don't think it should be an issue, but it's worth investigating.

I didn't think it was so well known...from my understanding, all that had been confirmed is Panasonic hired some of the Pioneer engineers.

The first reports I remember reading clearly stated that Panasonic would be getting Pio's kuro tech... I think it's even been discussed here previously.
