Default Advice on a True HD decoder Receiver

Understanding audio set up, decoding...etc is confusing the hell out of me. Even with the great HD Advisor columns. I think those are actually confusing me more

I have my PS3 set to bitstream over HDMI so from what I've read I believe the receiver with now be able to do the decoding. Am I correct?

I'm currently using a Denon AVR-1908 receiver with a 65" Panasonic Plasma and PS3 as Blu ray.

Also, any advice on Receivers with true HD decoders?

    thanks

PS3 can't bitstream HD audio. You have to set it to LPCM and have the PS3 internally decode it then send it to your receiver. LPCM sounds exactly the same as having the receiver decode the bitstream, the only difference is it won't show up as TrueHD or HD Master on your receiver.

I know its very confusing. It was even more confusing back when the first HDMI receivers came out trying to find out between passthrough and etc.

For starters, the PS3 can only bitstream DVD audio - Dolby Digital and DTS. It cannot bitstream either blu-ray lossless audio codec, TrueHD or DTS Master Audio; it's a limitation in its hardware.

Basically, the only thing your receiver needs to be able to do is accept multi-channel LPCM audio over HDMI and you will be able to hear Dolby TrueHD tracks.

Use the "display" button on your PS3 remote to show you which audio format you're currently using.

It was nice to be greeted with a DTS-HD Master Audio trailer prior to watching Transporter 3; it reminded me of the old "flying CD" trailer that preceded old DTS movies, both in the theater and on DVD.
