Default Your advise regarding Onkyo TX-SR806???

Good day all,

I want to upgrade my humble 5 years old Surround system to something new. my budget for a receiver is around 700$. After searching I ended up liking the features on TX-SR806 (upscaling, 5 HDMI and THX certification). I need your help to clarify the following:
- What are the best receivers within my price range
- Is THX certification is really something worth it (I'm also plan to get THX speakers).
- I read somewhere that when you put TX-SR806 in "through" mode, the video quality get affected by small blue pixels in dark shots, in other word, the receiver process the video even in that mode. Can someone who tried the reciever confirm this

Man thanks in advance

What is your budget? I own an Onkyo myself, this one: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_580TXN9...06.html?tp=179, it's a great machine and I love it.

I can't imagine you would be dissapointed by the 806.

my budget is 700$ for the receiver, NR906 is little bit expensive for me, what the main difference between the models beside the the upscaling and the network? did you face any video issues during the through mode?

It seems like a good reciever but what I'm afraid of is the pixel altering in the dark shots in"through" mode

I wouldn't go with an 806. They are actually a step down when compared to the 805 series. You have to get an 876 and above to get the same quality of DACs and amps they had in the 805 and above.

I just got an 806 a month ago, no blue dot problems here, tried all the settings with both dvd players(Pioneer), my HD-A3 and my BD player(Memorex), though mode, and all upscale settings, and not a blue dot to be found. So far I am very happy with it.

Good to hear and what kind of speakers do you use?

If you can stretch your budget by just a tad, you can snatch this (Pioneer SC-05). It has one hardcore amplifier and using Windows Live search 10% cashback, you can get it for about $700 and a song.

Thumbs up

I too would say that the 806 is an excellent receiver but when compared to the 805 there are a couple of steps backwards. I would still say it's an awesome unit and would be a sizeable upgrade for you. That said, if the power and DAC's do concern you, the 876 can be found for around $899 on Newegg.com.

You can also look into the 706. I have it and so far it has been nothing less than great! It is also THX certified, but has 4 HDMI input, vice 5.

Overall, I think you will love the Onkyo as they offer the best bang-for-your buck of most receivers. Take it from me, I've had a 605, 606 and now a 706.

I think you can get it for less than $500 if you take advantage of the 10% cashback offer going on in e-bay.

Interesting. No one ever mentions quality of DACs and amps, just what formats it decodes.

How would the ones in a 805 compare to a Denon in the same price range?

Or, you can get the 706 direct from Onkyo for $489 -

http://www.shoponkyo.com/products.cf...ubcat=Receiver

You have to register for Club Onkyo & log in to see the price, but you get 10 points for registering and can redeem them for a $10 discount on any purchase. That price is for a refurbished unit, which has a 1 year parts & labor warranty instead of 2 years on new products. Not sure how Onkyo is for refurbished receivers; I've seen several people post that they've bought refurbs from Onkyo and they were always brand new. I do know I bought my DVP-HD805 HD DVD player from them as refurbished, and it was most definitely brand spanking new.

I don't have any video issues with my Onkyo. As for the differences between the models, I wouldn't know since this is my first and only Onkyo receiver I own.

It's a different THX certification, the 706 has THX select, the 805 and 806 has THX Ultra 2 which is a much higher spec for the amps and some other internal processing.
