No better than it would look upscaled by any HDTV, I imagine.

And what does that look like? I haven't used tapes in many years. I went to stand alone disc recorders six or seven years ago.

VHS??? What they hell were they thinking? I guess they must of have a bunch of spare parts from the VHS years and wanted to get rid of it without paying a recycling fee.

Yeah I switched to DVD only years a go, now I'm in the process of switching to BD only... Of course the added bit of compatibility helps so that's keeping my DVD colllection alive longer than my VHS collection.

That combo player is probably targeted at offices, where there is still quite a bit of instructional material available only on VHS tape.

Got a BD30 and love Panasonic, but not pulling the trigger on an upgrade until I see a Panasonic with:

- MKV support playable from a data disk, supporting full x264 1080p and AC3 5.1
- divx and xvid support
- netflix download support

The BD/VCR I think is a heck of a product. For those of us who still have a lot of VHS tapes or need that backwards compatibility, this player represents a single product which can basically play every major consumer format that has been on the market for the last 20+ years.

I see this going into our business installations regularly in 2009 and onward, especially if Panasonic got the discrete codes correct on the player - which they have not on other recent DVD/VCR offerrings.

I'm not sure why this is being reported as news considering that they showed them at CES in January, but the addition of MSRP is nice.

I'm going to be keeping my eye on the new Oppo player which is supposed to be PS3 fast, and pretty nearly a perfect DVD upscaler, but the Panasonic players are way cheaper and I heavily watch only Blu-ray now... So, one of these may be in my rack before long.

I'd also like better scratched/smudged disc support. I know these discs have this uber-special coating that helps with this. But's it's still a major pain when one partial fingerprint stops playback cold on a Java-enabled disc. It's like 2-3 minutes until you see if you got it.
