Default Onkyo TX-SR605/SR805

Hi,
I heard this receiver was coming out in May, so I looked at the amazon.com website and it says "This item is not available to order", and jr.com also does not have this item listed. I also called jr and they said that they did NOT have this product in their inventory. Anybody know what to do?

Hint: When a CE company says a product is released in a certain month they mean the month after that, haha.

Unfortunately no. J&R *was* taking pre-orders for $399, but I guess that has passed.

But then again... $499 for a receiver that does all that the 605 has is still a fantastic deal.

The format is for storage, not decoding. The decoding is done by either the player or the receiver, and I have not seen any info to support what you are saying. HDMI 1.3 has more than enough bandwidth to pass all next-gen audio formats and it would defeat the purpose of these receivers having onboard DTS HD decoders if nothing could pass it through.

Got links?

No next gen player for BD or HD DVD is capable of passing trueHd or DTSHD-MA undecoded over HDMI yet. A future firmware update will be required for those devices with HDMI 1.3 to make them capable of passing these advanced codecs in their undecoded form.

This is an issue with how the audio is encoded. If it is 'Advanced encoded'... the disc will not allow the audio to be passed as 'raw' (undecoded) data... the player must decode the signal and send it to the receiver. MOST HD DVD titles with DD+ are encoded in 'Advanced mode'.

Just because a unit has HDMI 1.3 does not mean it will support all of the 1.3 features.

HERE is a link to an article at AVS.

The resulting mix can be output directly as 5.1 channel PCM or analog, but to get a multichannel bitstream it is re-encoded to DTS then sent to the receiver to be decoded again. It's too early to know if all future HD DVD players and discs will be like this, but it does hint that future players with HDMI 1.3 might re-encode the PCM to DD+, TrueHD or DTS-HD to provide a bitstream output. If this is true, the ability to send these bitstreams over HDMI offers no advantage, in fact it would be undesirable. You might as well send the PCM over HDMI and not bother with another encode/decode step which can potentially degrade the audio.

Jed,
There is a typo in the main article... and it actually made me say "Wait... what?!" The '4' should be an 'R'.

Hello. I’m confused..

I’m thinking about ordering the SR605 model to supplement my Toshiba HD-E1 player. The HD Player "only" supports HDMI 1.2.

Are you saying that I won’t be able to enjoy True HD & DD+ over HDMI?

Or did I misunderstand?

Sorry for being a noob.

Don't be sorry, I'm not a noob and I'm as confused as hell on this also. I have a HD-A2 and a PS3 and I am trying to figure out the best receiver (in the 605's price range if not cheaper) for my audio and I can't seem to understand whats going on either. One minute I should get the 605, one minute I shouldn't wait. Confusion is what Lossless Audio is doing to us, so don't be sorry.

Well, I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s confused... I was saving up for a Denon 2807 (I think it’s called that) then the 605 was announced. So it’s frustrating, having the cash waiting to be spend on the 605, and not knowing if I will even get what I want with that setup. :S

The 605 won’t be out until mid June here.. So with a little luck I can draw from some of the experiences you guys make over there before shopping.

/Jan

So my player will decode the signal and output it over HDMI 1.2, if i set the output to pcm? Will I then even benefit from the 605 or can i use any other amp capable of HDMI ?

All I have right now is Digital Coax and Optical choices (and stereo - red/white - but that's barely worth mentioning) so I NEED an HDMI receiver.
