Default Pioneer VSX-1018 or Yamaha RX-V663?

Anyone done research or actually heard and used either of these? In the early 90s I would have went Yamaha over Pioneer but things change. Please do not suggest any Onkyo receivers. I am just interested in differences between these 2 receivers. The Pioneer has 3 HDMI inputs vs Yamahas 2. I don't really care about upscaling or HDMI inputs. Pioneer claims 120w channel Yamaha claims 95w. Has anyone actualy heard them? How are their auto setups and menus?

    which one's cheaper?

Ok, it seems like you just want someone to make you mind up for you...

    Get the Pioneer.

    Pioneer's user interface is better...
The Pioneer has a nicer remote

The Pioneer features an adjustable crossover on the Subwoofer LFE (Low Frequency Effects) pre-out channel. (a nice feature)

but don't be fooled by power ratings... They're about the same

    Pioneer:
    Power Requirements. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .AC 120 V, 60 Hz
    Power Consumption . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .390 W

    Yamaha:
    Power Requirements. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .AC 120 V, 60 Hz
    Power Consumption . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .400 W

For myself, Id pick the pioneer.

    Upscaler
you said not important to you, it is to me. Might make my NES,SNES,N64,Sega,DC,Xbox,PS1 look better.

    HDMI
again you said not important. I can currently use 2 HDMI ports, would be nice to have a spare for that next device I will probably buy.

    USB
Can plug my iphone/dock right into the front of the receiver WITHOUT an extra addon like the yamaha

Those are the three reasons off the top of my head. Im trying to look into them some more but the internet is acting wierd.
    Current Setup

    Infinity Entra II Fronts,
    Entra Surround Backs
    Entra center
    Entra II Sub
    Infinity Primus Surrounds

Some interesting tidbits by looking in the manuals...

The pioneer is rated at .09% distortion, while the yamaha is at .06% (yamaha is better)

The pioneer's power consumption is 350w, the yamaha's is 400w (means if the yamaha is as efficient as the pioneer would actually have more power since it draws more)

The pioneer is about 3lbs heavier, generally people think this is rom having better components, this may or may not be the case, just an observation.

from my understanding the yamaha doesnt have upconverting, just a scaler. The pioneer has an upconverter.

If you could hear that difference, I'd buy you the reciever.

Is auto room correction a requirement? I'm personally not sure which is better, if they even both have it, but just something else to think about. I'm an Audyssey fan myself. Speaking of Audyssey, thought you had a 988?
