    Default Help with TrueHD

I have seen other posts like this one, sorry to bring this up again. This is a question that i need a little more understanding of. I have the toshiba A3 and the onkyo 605 hooked via hdmi 1.3. I am of course not getting the TrueHD LED to light up on the receiver. I am under the impression that the signal needs to come from bitstream via HDMI to make this happen, which my A3 cant do. My player can bitsream over spdf but what good does that do?
2nd question, should my player claim to offer Digital TrueHD and DTSHD which it does on the casing, if it only sends multichnl pcm. You are never sure what the 605 is getting.

    Please help

Since you say your player cant bitstream TrueHD then Im sure your PCMing it, which means your receiver wont say TrueHD because its not decoding it, your player is. Your still getting lossless audio so I wouldnt worry about it.

Make sure you wait on one of the smarter people to answer after me. I just learned all this within the last few days.

That's correct; if your player cannot bitstream the TrueHD track, then the "TrueHD light" on the receiver will not light up b/c you'll need to have the player decode the track and send it as PCM. You're getting the same audio either way; it's just in your case, the player is doing the work and not the receiver.

The Onkyo will decode the TrueHD if your player bitstreams to the receiver. In your case the A3 sends it over the HDMI as PCM and having a AVR that accepts PCM over HDMI is good as it eliminates the multiple cables for analog. You should set the output on the player as PCM and your receiver will give you the TrueHD sound. You are correct about the bitstream for the light to come on I believe because I have a friend with one and it doesn't light up when the PCM is sent from the player. I have an analog setup on my receiver so I have never played with the Onkyo.

You have A3? I don't believe that player can bitstream high res audio, you'll have to set the audio output to PCM to send it to your receiver. That's the only way you'll hear the TrueHD sound and no you won't see the TrueHD sign on your receiver but if you hit the display button on the A3, you'll see that it's sending out TrueHD. I hope that made sense.

Just a note, the A3 will only offer PCM and PCM downmix options via HDMI.

Yes, because that is what it is receiving.

...a lossless 5.1 PCM stream, encoded on the disc with TrueHD to save space and decoded in the player to give the original PCM data back to you that they had when the were mastering the disc before they encoded it with TrueHD.

That brings up an interesting point. The OP says the A3 shows the DTS-MA logo on the player but it can't bitstream DTS-MA and it can decode DTS-MA so how exactly can it claim to support it?

I guess in this case they defined support as "being able to extract the DTS core".

Odd that the player has the DTS-MA logo, my A30 does not to the best of my knowlege. If you press the display (I think, idk I mapped it to info on my harmony) button it will say the audio codec is "dts".

I was just going off what one of the posters said. I know on my player (A35) it shows the DTA-MA HD logo but the A35 is one of the models capable of bit streaming it so I figured that was why it had the logo.

It's a shame the only HD-DVD that I have with DTS-HD 7.1 is Pan's Labyrinth and since I have the PS3 that is the only movie I have ever heard in true DTS-MA HD. It sounded fantastic which makes me really wish the PS3 could bitatream. Anyhow one day I will probably upgrade to a BD player capable of bitstreaming.

    Warining, a bit ot here
Speaking of the A35 I wonder what the price is getting to on those... I'm not going to buy one any time soon, but I would love to have an HD DVD player capable of bitstreaming... I was thinking about the sammy dual format player to kill the BD profile 1.1 and bitstreaming HD DVD birds with one stone, but from what I hear that player has horrific audio problems.

The Sammy 5000 (the duo) is only profile 1.0 and your 1400 has better bitstreaming capabilities.

Looks like you own enough HD DVDs to justify buying an A35 and keep your old one for backup.

I heard that 1.1 was supposed to be in the works and that bitstreaming was supposed to be totally solved as of may, any thoughts on that rumor?
