Vizio 46" might be a good deal. 40" Samsung 4071 might be found for about $1000...maybe a little more. THAT would be the best.

The Toshiba Regza 37" model is well within that price range. I would recommend it over Vizio.

The Regza Toshibas have indeed gotten good reviews overall. I usually recommend that people just stick with 3 companies when looking for an lcd set--Samsung, Sony, or Toshiba.
makes it simple, as all 3 of these companies lcd sets seem to consistently receive the most positive reviews from my experiences reading magazines and looking online. Good luck.
the main thing that bugs me about many of the Toshiba sets is the built in dvd player that many come with. totally extraneous and unwanted by anyone truly concerned with getting the best in dvd payback. a major negative imo.
I don't know if that model has one, but many I have seen do.
btw: the best VALUE in a set in that range is unquestionably the 1080p Sony 50" RPTV that can now be had for around $1399. great price, amazing pq imo.
EDIT: I guess 50" is a little bigger than you are looking for, but imo as the sets get smaller the value decreases because they charge too much for what you get imo. much better values in the 42"+ range. -

Westinghouse 42" 1080p LCD.
I paid $1500 for mine but now Best Buy has it for $989.
It's one of the cheapest 1080p sets because it doesn't have a built in tuner so to get channels you would need a Cable or Satelite box which I would have anyway, so it wasn't an issue for me.

42" under $1000? That's pushing it. The best I could find is the 42" Vizio plasma (VP42HDTV). Otherwise, all you can find is a LCD tv, which won't yield as good results.
The best LCD tv I found for under $1000 is Sharp's 37" LCD 37D90U.
If I were you, I'd either save up for something better or wait up to a year for better TVs to hit the market.Sell me your used BDs!!

Show me where I can find that for around a grand!!! Amazon usually has it for around $1500. I might be financing a new TV soon, my plasma doesn't have the resolution to cut it as a computer monitor which I tend to use it a lot for. I mean yeah I prolly wouldn't use the full 1080p for my computer maybe 1600x1200 but it'd be better than 1024x768.

Panasonic 42" plasma (70u) would be my suggestion. I can assure you if you are getting a 1080p set for under $1000 it's used(which isn't really a bad thing) or garbage(think vizio, olevia, westinghouse, etc). You'll get much better performance out of a great 720 set than a bargain or outdated 1080.

Thanks everybody. I haven't settled on anything just yet, but appreciate the feedback. If I stay in the 42" and under range I think a 720p would be just fine, but Arkadin's suggestion of the 50" Sony RPTV has me really pondering that idea.

You can get some great deals on PRTV's in this price range. I've got a Toshiba 720P 50" that I've very happy with. The Giants looked fantastic beating the Pats last sunday, my bluray and HD DVD collection are also stunning on this set. Best part is, you don't have to do a whole heck of a lot of calabrating to get a great picture, the default sports setting offers up a great picture. I'm sure if you want to tweek the heck out of it then you could an even more stunning pic.

I've been extraordinarily impressed with my 720p 37" Philips.
For the $900~ it goes for, I honestly think it is one of the best name brand buys on the market.
Every hookup you could possibly want, extremely well built, superb picture, great interactive menu software... the remote sucks though.
