DVD audio optical out to 5.1 analog in (to receiver)
Any suggestions how to or what to buy (vs. a totally new receiver) regarding above?
I have a 'new' Panasonic DVD-R with audio optical output that I want to connect to my older Yamaha 5.1 receiver; receiver has no coaxial input (converters readily available) nor HDMI input to use direct from the DVD-R so I am looking for a way to 'pass' the 5.1 surround from the DVD-R to my 5.1receveiver & speakers .....yes I could use the analog left/right output from the DVD player into the receiver but that gets me stereo (I think) not 5.1.
I have a Sony DVD player with 5.1 analog outputs direct into the reciever now that this 'new' DVD-R will replace. thx for your suggestions. -

hmmm, i do not know of any method where you can convert a optical laser to 5.1 analog signal. you might need to buy a new receiver.

Ya, I don't know of anything either. You are correct though that with the left and right analog out on your DVD player you would only get stereo sound. Best you could hope for then would be Dolby PL IIx.

You'd basically need a receiver. First, you'd need to decode the sound to PCM (multichannel PCM doesn't go over optical). Then, you'd need to convert it to analog with DACs. That's kinda 2/3s of what a receiver does.
Note that a pre-amp would do it too. But I doubt you'll find one of those on the cheap.
