Default PS3 HDMI audio issues - help!

I cannot, no matter what I've tried to do, get uncompressed audio to work with my PS3 and my receiver. I have tried to figure this out but I am very confused...I've done some extensive looking around on this site but I still can't find the info I need. Hopefully someone with some insight into PS3's can help me.

I run an HDMI connection from the PS3 into my Samsung HT-TQ85 receiver, and from there an HDMI into my TV. I believe the Samsung is a passthrough, but no matter what settings I use under "Audio Settings" on the PS3 I cannot get the digital signal to go through...it's either PLII or no audio. I don't quite understand if I have to choose the frequencies manually, but the automatic settings do not work for me. I don't even know if this receiver can process the uncompressed audio, and am not sure where to find out. On the PS3 side, I have the audio output under "BD/DVD setting" set on Linear PCM but it still doesn't work.

As you can probably tell I'm very confused and frustrated...any help is appreciated! What do I need to do to play uncompressed audio from my PS3?

A reciever that can accept multi-channel PCM via HDMI

*edit* And a powered subwoofer if you decide to go that route. Keep the speakers if they sound good to you.

In other words a hdmi receiver that is NOT a pass-through receiver. Best bets for the least amount of $$:
    Yamaha 661
    Onkyo 605

Do you guys know if the Samsung HT-TQ85 is passthrough, or multi-channel PCM?

The HTIB you have needs to be set to "Off" because the "On" setting passes the audio through to the TV. I do not know if this will receive multi-channel PCM audio, but it will receive Dolby and DTS at least. You need to try it, the manual doesn't say for sure.

If it's applying DPLII then it is sending 2 channel audio like it should be to a TV.

I tried playing around with it some more...set the PS3 to Bitstream and set all possible frequencies for Linear PCM (example: "Linear PCM 5.1 44.1 khz")in the setup page (I honestly don't know if that's doing anything.) I *think* I got DTS-HD out of Fantastic Four 2 (may have been normal DTS) but could not get the lossless audio out of The Prestige, the surrounding sound effects are there but no vocals. Yea the instruction manual doesn't say too much about HDMI, although there is a "LPCM" on the display.

    Thanks for everyone's help...

That means you're getting 2.0 channel PCM only. You are getting the left and right channels but not the center channel and it's probably doing a stereo surround thing to fill the surrounds.

You are probably not getting DTS-HD, you're getting the core track.

It should sound as good as you can get this way.

I dont think your reciever is capable of passing through
