Honestly, it is better this way. Because it was a core app, it only got updated with the OS. Now Google can make a more proper app and keep it maintained (or you can just use HTML5 in the browser).
The same goes for maps. Google will be bringing out their own navigation app soon and it may even be better than Apple's. I used an Android phone for well over a year and Google Navigation was very good (currently using Waze, it's kinda meh).

yes but google want's to build the app so they can add back in ads. This is a strong reason why google did not want to renew the deal.
