    Default Digital audio

Can my 'video in' optical input on my amp be used for the audio out of my new HDDVD player which only has digital optical out (no analogue)?

Going to need more info to give you a correct answer.

What HD DVD player do you have? Why does it not have analogue out?

    What receiver do you have?

Initially I want to say the optical output of your HD DVD player is meant to go to your optical input on the receiver. That's why it's there. But because this is so basic, I'm leaning to it being a more tricky question, and that's why I'm hesitant to answer.

ALL HD DVD players have analog audio outputs. HERE is a picture of the 'back' of the A2 (IIRC, it has the 'worst' connection setup, please correct me if I'm wrong).

Glock is right, though. We need more information... what model HD DVD player are you using... what is the model number on your receiver (some have assignable audio, some do not)...

AJB, yes you can assign the "Video IN" connection of your receiver to be used for your HD-DVD's optical connection. A lot of receivers simply use "Video 1" and "Video 2" instead of branding things "CD" or "DVD" nowadays. The only thing this corresponds to is what button on the receiver (or remote) you press, so you will push "Video 1" to listen to your HD-DVD player through the optical connection, and then whatever input your TV has to be set on to see the picture.

Thanks for the replies. The models I have are listed after my signature. It is a bit unusual the Tosh doesnt have analogue outs but the optical will do. It just means I will not have Dolby True HD for the moment.
    Thanks.

    I don't know why the HD-A2/HD-E2 don't have multi-channel outputs. That's weird.

You can't do HDMI for audio as it only does pass-through.

I recommend using HDMI in for video and optical for audio.
