Default PCM vs dolby / DTS 5.1

Is PCM really THAT much better than Dolby / DTS 5.1 ?

Currently, I run an HDMI cable from my HD set top box to my TV (and same goes for my PS3) For audio, I have an optical cable from the receiver to the tv / ps3.

This plays PCM in 2.0 mode and plays DTS / DD 5.1 fine.

Is it really worth me upgrading my current receiver to an HDMI compatible receiver PLUS buying the extra HDMI cables I would need? (were talking about $500 CAD)

    Is this worth it?

There are several threads in this forum that ask and answer this same question.

all the threads I've read say yes PCM is better, but my question is, is it THAT much better? Is it worth $500 + tax?

Is it like going from SD to HD?

I apologize now if my exact question has been discussed. A link would be lovely.

Honestly, if you're too lazy to use the search function, I'm too busy to use it for you. This EXACT question has been answered several times.
