Personally, I'd buy a used receiver off someone for $200 or less and a good used pair of bookshelf speakers with the other $250.

$200 for the speakers and sub, I don't really need 5.1, but it'd be nice.. And I'm probably getting the pioneer VSX-820 receiver too with it

Ghetto, I really don't want to sound mean but $200 is not going to get you anything that's even remotely decent. Even at $200, you can only buy one entry level Polk Audio bookshelf speaker. Save your money. Sometimes it's better to wait awhile and get something that's going to last rather then just spending your money as soon as you have it. Trust me on this, I have alot of experience with buying crap and basically wasting money.

I'm not exactly looking for a high end system here, and I'm looking to spend $500 maximum on this setup for good, and I don't exactly have a stable source of income (14 years old, no job, money to spend..) I just want something that sounds better than the TV's built in speakers and will sound great with movies and TV.

    Something like this at $220/pair:

But I think one could do better with used equipment.

So, any other opinions? I'm spending $500 max and need at least two speakers, a receiver, and a sub

I would suggest that you buy a receiver and two speakers now for that 500$ and a sub later. I don't know which speakers are good choice there, in EU for example Wharfedale and Tannoy make decent cheap speakers but I don't know their availability in NA.

Not as good as a deal as you think. For $199+ shipping you can get the basic Fluance 5.0 set. You essentially get three extra speakers (center, two surrounds) for a modest uptick in out of pocket (Polks $226, Fluance $277).

With a $500 budget, I still prefer a 5.1 set-up. If you got a couple extra Jacksons, you will not go wrong with the Dayton 5.1 w/10" sub. I've heard the 8" and 10" sub, both are quite powerful... and blow away retail subs rated at 2-3X the power.

Next step is about $675, I think. Receiver + Fluance 5.0 set + Dayton Sub.

The bookshelf route, I think, is for people with a focus on music/stereo content. By the time you find two decent bookshelf speakers and sub, it's more than these 5.1 systems.

Myself, I spend 75-80% of my time watching movies and TV in 5.1 surround. The rest of the time, I set my receiver to 6ch Enhanced Stereo and enjoy room-filling music.

Alright, I think i'm going to go with the dayton set w/ 10" sub + pioneer receiver. I don't want to spend any more than $500 on this setup altogether so I think this would probably the the best bang for my buck. If anyone else has any other suggestions they can throw out before I go ahead and order go ahead, but remember I want to spend $500 firm, I'm not planning on buying anything down the line..
