Available Studio Library Catalog Title Listings with the Blu-ray Releases Highlighted

Today in Home Media Magazine has an article to put his comments in perspective. Its not like Tom K Arnold has ignored Blu-ray.

If you don't think multiple billions of dollars in Blu-ray sales and revenues are significant then you scale is way off when you crow about Blu-ray 3D or HD DVR usage which are orders of magnitude smaller. Blu-ray sales and rental revenues are significant, even if they are smaller than DVD.

There is no proof whatsoever that there are new movie buyers buying movies. A big chunk of former DVD buyers are now BD buyers.

Disney is a poor example. Families buy Disney titles. The people who had kids that watched them when the titles came out on VHS are not the same people that had kids when the DVD versions came out are are not the same people that have kids now and are currently buying the Disney Blu-ray+DVD+DC combo versions.

which is why I put at the end of my post that Disney is a hypothetical collection and you can replace Disney with any collection that would fit your lifestyle. Let's put James Bond there instead of Disney, or Godfather collection, or any other collection that would have seen VHS to DVD to Blu. Tough sell to joe consumer.
The question is how do we convince J6P to purchase catalog on Blu?

Its a better question when you talk about other titles that consumers may have collected and how do you get them to replace their DVD collections with Blu-ray.

The short answer is you don't , at least not completely. Even uber collectors that have a lot of DVD, won't rebuy them all on Blu-ray. I won't and I'm on the extreme enthusiast fringe. Most normal consumers certainly will not.

But many people, including me, will re buy titles on Blu-ray that we will think we will watch again, if the price is right. But things that don't improve much on high definition , like comedies and chick flicks or character driven dramas or TV shows, will only be replaced by me if the price is very right, under $10 for example and even then is less of a priority if I see some other genre title.

No one now expects consumers to replace their DVD libraries fully as streaming from Netflix, better sat and cable etc also give alternatives to watch those things and some DVDs are good enough for their limited repeat watching potential.

Some Blu-ray catalog titles are obviously worth re buying on Blu-ray if you have the DVD already, some are not so obvious, but the way to get all them to sell more is to eventually get them at some point after release to be less pricey.

Will they average joe and the diehard collector rebuy when they can purchase a digital dowload (not rent)?

How does that make a lick of sense when those consumers already own the DVD? So you are saying that when the DVD that they already own is no longer available on the shelf they will then be compelled to buy the BR version?! Are you counting on all those DVDs to self destruct or something?

Blu-ray's growth rate in new release and studio catalog sales has been slowed but not stopped because of the recent economic conditions as people are still spending around $20 billion a year in 2010 on packaged media sales and rental as well as incrementally more cloud based stuff.

Do you want to cross post the data on 2010 and 2000 catalog titles you just posted in the Ultraviolet thread here? They are more on topic and useful in this thread I think. Those were useful observations and worthy of comments.

I never said I was not concerned about the pace of catalog title releases, or that I did not want more. But I do understand why it is what it is and I see the pace of announcements accelerating for the fall.

Small studios that are concerned about $45,000 costs are looking at projections of less than 5000 units or so and have a current issue at the moment of distribution of those kind of releases at retail. The issue is more at this time that there are actually more available Blu-ray titles available that are going to take up retail facings this fall that there is less retailer demand for new catalog releases.

Thats a different decision factor that the overall growth in the cumulative sales combined of all the Blu-ray catalog sales currently available which is steadily growing. But retailers have more than enough selection available now and catalog titles are not as time sensitive as day and date new releases.

Major studios have to continue to release some new to Blu-ray catalog titles to keep a flow into the retail pipeline but they don't need to throw releases in the stream when the retail demand is already satisfied with the existing releases. Retail just has to catch up a bit here and digest the titles already available as they increase the Blu-ray facings on display.

So far this year (the first 8 months) the major studios have released a total of 139 catalog movies, compared to 182 for last year.
