There is no proof whatsoever that there are new movie buyers buying movies. A big chunk of former DVD buyers are now BD buyers. -

which is why I put at the end of my post that Disney is a hypothetical collection and you can replace Disney with any collection that would fit your lifestyle. Let's put James Bond there instead of Disney, or Godfather collection, or any other collection that would have seen VHS to DVD to Blu. Tough sell to joe consumer.
The question is how do we convince J6P to purchase catalog on Blu? -

Well as Blu-ray catalog prices are getting below $15 now and even $10 for many titles , thats coming into impulse buying habits that consumers have been used to for DVD now for a decade.
To what degree consumers will buy Blu-ray catalog is still an very open question..

Consumers are used to $5-$10 for DVD catalog now. The thing is, as Blu-ray catalog prices keep falling, so does DVD, so the price disparity (as a whole) remains proportionally high.
Consumers need to feel compelled to spend the extra money, and the only way they're going to do that is if they get used to Blu-ray on their increasingly larger HDTVs. The difference just doesn't jump out at you on the smaller TVs, or if they're sitting too far away too appreciate the difference. -

Consumers will also move more to Blu-ray catalog titles as Blu-ray and BD+DVD movies displace DVD only ones on retail shelves, just like Blu-ray players are doing with DVD players now. As Blu-ray household penetration rises, retailers will naturally service that market.

How does that make a lick of sense when those consumers already own the DVD? So you are saying that when the DVD that they already own is no longer available on the shelf they will then be compelled to buy the BR version?! Are you counting on all those DVDs to self destruct or something?
Sony BDP-S1, Toshiba A3, Xbox HD DVD Addon. Samsung 1600, Insignia BR W/Netflix!

No. You are confusing a decision a consumer makes with the larger issue of increasing Blu-ray catalog sales to millions of consumers.
First, as the prices of Blu-ray catalog prices drop at retail, individual consumers who may already own the DVDs may see it much more attractive to re buy and double dip on a Blu-ray version if the price is lower. Or as prices fall on catalog Blu-ray titles more and more consumers see the purchase at a price they see as a fair value or being worth it to buy the Blu-ray version, even if they have the DVD.
Consumers, as in many individuals, as a group, will tend to buy more of something when they see it at retail. As more Blu-ray and BD+DVD skus displace DVD on retail shelves or just become more visible at retail, more and more Blu-ray catalog titles will naturally be sold to the growing amount of Blu-ray hardware owners.
If you already own the DVD, its irrelevant if the DVD is already there to you, but its very relevant to you that a Blu-ray version might be available at $10 right in front of your face at Walmart Target or Best Buy or now even supermarkets or drug stores for $10, as is starting to happen this month at several regional and national grocery and drug store chains..

Blu-ray's growth rate in new release and studio catalog sales has been slowed but not stopped because of the recent economic conditions as people are still spending around $20 billion a year in 2010 on packaged media sales and rental as well as incrementally more cloud based stuff.

Bruce:
Do you want to cross post the data on 2010 and 2000 catalog titles you just posted in the Ultraviolet thread here? They are more on topic and useful in this thread I think. Those were useful observations and worthy of comments..

The studios haven't given up on the format, but they have cut back on catalog releases this year. Reciting 20-30 titles that are scheduled to come out won't change that fact. So far this year (the first 8 months) the major studios have released a total of 139 catalog movies, compared to 182 for last year. That's a big difference and really surprising considering 4 year old formats typically have an accelerating increase of output.
