Thanks for the update once again.
25% BD market share for Percy Jackson seems right. I'm not familiar with this movie but it seems to be similar to those Harry Potter and Twilight movies and it was probably expected to perform similar to them on Blu-ray. Good outing for the other two movies as well. No big box office performers came out so the BD revenue for the week was expected.
I don't see any new theatrical release worth buying for the next couple of months, now it's time to continue watching the BD's I have and catch up with any catalog titles that go on sale. Even though I dislike the kind of movies like Clash Of The Titans, I decided to give it a chance and saw it theatrically. I didn't like it and I will not be buying it but I'm interested in seeing how it performs on BD. -

http://www.the-numbers.com/interacti...hp?newsID=5284DVD Sales: New Releases Light Up the Sales Chart
A trio of new releases led the way on the sales chart this week with Percy & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief topping the chart. It sold 823,000 units over its opening week for consumer spending at retail of $13.99 million. Hot Tub Time Machine opened in second place with 431,000 units / $7.33 million, which is in line with expectations. On the other hand, The Crazies was a little weaker with opening week sales of 249,000 / $3.73 million; however, it did well on high definition. Alice in Wonderland grew by 32% to 222,000 units over the week to lift its totals to 3.44 million units / $65.40 million after a month of release. The Book of Eli fell from first to fifth with 176,000 / $3.85 million for the week and 1.26 million units / $27.89 million after three.
The other other new releases were both TV on DVD with The Closer: Season Five debuting in 14th place with 58,000 units / $1.50 million. Lastly, Eureka: Season 3.5 opened in 20th place with 41,000 units / $785,000 for the week. For shows not on network TV these are very solid results.
Blu-ray sales were up 15% for the week to $17.4 million, according to Home Media Magazine, which is especially impressive for this time of year. In fact, this is up 62% from last year, despite DVD sales dropping by 1%. I'm amazed DVD sales were lower when you look at the chart from last year.
Compared to DVD, Blu-ray sales represented 11% of total sales and 20% of the top twenty comparison, so there's nothing to complain about there. The best selling Blu-ray of the week was Percy & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief with approximately 250,000 units sold. Hot Tub Time Machine was in second place with 170,000 units sold, which is high for this type of film, while The Crazies sold close to 110,000 units, or nearly 32% of total sales.
There's still talk that Blu-ray is a niche market, but when first run releases, even R-rated comedies, can sell more than 25% of their total units in Blu-ray, then that's beyond niche. It's a mainstream format; it isn't the dominate format, but it is mainstream.

We have pretty much seen the Blu-ray revenue floor already this year and the next big DVD releases coming up (like Watchmen last year) Clash of the Titans should do well on Blu-ray. Might be a bit touch and go for the next couple weeks as the release slate is meh (The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo might be a sleeper on Blu-ray)
Even if it does its really not significant in the big swing of things whats happens on home video mid July during these low volume periods.
Really the next significant even it how Clash of the Titans does on Blu-ray marketshare and revenues on its release.
Next couple weeks have kinda low new release total box office performance pedigrees as well.

07-13-2010 10:57 AM #1468Projections: ‘Percy,’ ‘Hot Tub’ to Repeat Atop Charts (7/11/10)
By : Kelly Burner | Posted: 12 Jul 2010
The low-wattage box office power of new releases for the week ended July 11 should allow the previous week’s releases to stay atop the charts. The combined theatrical power of the three major new releases for the week totaled less than $50 million.
Anchor Bay came out with the crime drama Brooklyn’s Finest, starring Don Cheadle, Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke, and which earned more than $27 million in domestic theaters. Sony Pictures released the drama A Single Man, which earned $9.2 million theatrically, while Music Box Films came out with the thriller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which earned $9.1 million.
Of the new releases for the week, Brooklyn’s Finest should perform best, but it is unlikely to become the top selling or top renting title for the week. Instead, Fox’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians and Hot Tub Time Machine will hold strong at first and second place for a second consecutive week.

Hey Kosty,
Sorry if this information is already posted somewhere, but I didn't see it: is there information on units rented/sold? With all the discussion that optical is dying out and being replaced by other media/platforms, I'd be interested to see how much change there has been in optical useage. Is there really a significant shift away from optical at all or just a change in spending habits? Although clearly less units are being sold on optical (for various reasons), are people actually renting fewer titles or are companies like Redbox actually increasing optical useage, but with the result of lower/decreased overall revenues? -

We have some these ready data sources.
Weekly sell through revenues separately for DVD and Blu-ray from Home Media Magazine.
Weekly rental income combined for DVD+Blu-ray.
Units sold percentage comparison ratio of the 20 bestselling DVD titles vs the 20 bestselling Blu-ray titles of the week. Since those are pretty much the same, thats now basically a percentage of the units sold of the bestselling 20 titles each week that are either DVD or Blu-ray.
The percentages in units sold of the best selling 20 titles that are DVD or Blu-ray (Blu-ray+DVD combos count as Blu-ray)
The ratio of Blu-ray units and sold compared to the bestselling Blu-ray title.
The ratio of DVD and Blu-ray units sold for titles compared to the bestselling DVD+Blu-ray title.
The revenues and units sold of the bestselling top 30 DVD titles. (the numbers)
We can derive an estimate for Blu-ray units sold by title for about the bestselling top 25 or so Blu-ray titles each week.
Total DVD+Blu-ray rental income each week.
We can derive an estimate for the unit sales of the top 20 DVD titles each week and the top 20 Blu-ray titles each week (my Top 20 unit estimate)
Total DVD and Blu-ray revenue marketshares
Top top 20 DVD title and top 20 Blu-ray title units.
Quarterly we get an estimate of total units sold from HMM (their line chart) thats plotted on one of my unit charts , We can see its based on a calculation factor off their revenue estimates for each week. If we wanted to we can create a weekly unit estimate by dividing out the revenues by that factor.
We have determine top 20 units, not top 20 revenues each week.
We have total format revenues but not units each week.
We have top 20 unit marketshare, we can assume Blu-ray revenue top 20 marketshare is 20-25% higher than top 20 unit share because of $5 higher Blu-ray price points.
Did that answer the question?.
