‘Harry Potter’ Works Magic on Sales Chart
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Three high-profile new releases battled it out on the national home video charts this past week, as the flood of theatrical hits — crammed into December to capture the impulse shopper — continues.
The biggest winner, by far, was Warner Home Video’s Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which at $302 million also is the highest grossing of the three. The latest installment in the fantasy series easily topped the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart its first week in stores, outselling second-ranked Public Enemies, a fellow newcomer from Universal Studios, by a more than 4-to-1 margin..
Public Enemies ($97.1 million), a drama about celebrated 1930s gangsters —including John Dillinger, portrayed by Johnny Depp — did score a win on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week ended Dec. 13, debuting at No. 1 while The Half-Blood Prince finished second, with 74% as much rental activity.
Bowing in the third spot on the sales chart and No. 4 on the rental chart was Sony Pictures’ Julie & Julia, an acclaimed biopic about famed celebrity chef Julia Child that grossed $94.1 million in theaters.
The previous week’s top seller and renter, 20th Century Fox’s Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, slipped to No. 5 on the sales chart, right behind Paramount’s Star Trek, which held steady at No. 4 its fourth week in stores. Night was the No. 3 renter its sophomore week.
On Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc chart, Harry Potter was an easy victor, which isn’t surprising, given that 24% of its first-week sales were on the high-definition format. Public Enemies debuted at No. 2 and generated 30% of its week-one sales from the Blu-ray Disc version. Julie & Julia debuted at a distant No. 10, with Blu-ray Disc accounting for just 6% of total unit sales.

Amazing week of Blu-ray. That's good stuff. Expect something similar next week, I think.
I always like to look at these things and find the surprises. Here's one from deep in the top 20 Blu-ray.
Lost Seasons 1-5 ($108.99), from one day on Amazon, ranked by revenue as something like a 13 share. That item was 5.5x the price of your usual $19.99 BR.
This means that in 24 hours, on a single website, this one deal moved half as many Blu-ray dollars as Public Enemies did sitting at 10,000+ retailers and millions of retail fliers promoting it, and television commercials. Half, wow. Not sure if that is testament to Lost, the deal, or Amazon.Display: Epson HC 6100 Proj/106" Da-Lite High Power screen or Panasonic 50" Plasma

Agreed 100%
DVD did $509 million, and that is down 20% from last year. DVD sales continue to fall off a cliff. Astounding.
Sales of all optical discs down almost 14% from last year. That is a huge number on $588 million. Amazing.
Blu-ray only 13.4% of all physical media sales - after 3.5 years on the market. Astonishing. -

You do know that you are talking about week to week comparisons and not year to year, right? And you do know that last year on that week there was a certain movie called "The Dark Knight" released on home video, right?
Just for some context, Harry Potter 6 made $301 M domestically at the box office. The Dark Knight made $533 M domestically. Huge difference in popularity there. And yet Blu-Ray still managed to nearly double sales from last year. don't think being down only 13.x% from last year is nearly as bad as you think it is. In fact, I am surprised it is not more.
How much money did downloads make last week Mike? Oh yeah, they don't even track those numbers every week because they are so small

Wow, that Lost info is pretty good stuff. I know I grabbed that deal, it was too good to pass up, one of the best shows ever on TV and it looks and sounds amazing on Blu-Ray.
I don't think next week will be as strong. HP6 moved a lot of copies on BD, and I don't see Inglorious Basterds selling nearly as well. But I do think Blu-Ray could hit $50-60 M and still beat TDK week last year.Last edited by ack_bak; 12-18-2009 at 09:56 AM.

Just crazy numbers...
I remember, for awhile, people were questioning whether TDK's numbers would be beaten AT ALL this year.
Then Star Trek came out just a few weeks ago, and pretty much EVERYONE agreed that it would be the only week that would beat TDK's numbers from this year.
Then TS came out, and people were shocked that the previous Star Trek record was beat just a week later.
Now HP6 comes out and breaks the record AGAIN, just mind boggling. Very impressive.Blu-ray Discs Owned: 237

You mean the week ending 12/13/09? But yeah, that is exactly the point I was trying to make. Anyone expecting Harry Potter to outsell TDK on optical media is just trying to move the goal posts per their agenda. TDK is like the second highest grossing movie of all-time (not adjusted for inflation). Harry Potter 6 is ranked #31. It is not even close in terms of overall popularity and impact.

Blu-ray is showing itself to be a freight train at this point. Despite the people who are naysayers, the format is pretty much entrenched as the HD standard for home video in the marketplace which should maintain itself for the next ten or more years.
Could it be better? Sure! But, the positive growth trends year-on-year is exactly what those who appreciate top shelf HD are happy to see. It certainly would be nice to see BD continue to see 100% growth into next year, but that may be hoping for to much. -
