I have been very unimpressed with Netflix streaming up to this point. I think it is great that the PS3 offers this for those of us who have a Netflix subscription, it really makes a lot of sense.

I just wish the PS3 had Vudu HDX streaming

Just so we get it out of the way - now Netflix matters.

Regardless, I use it on atleast a weekly basis. There is a good selection of stuff if you look hard enough.

Ack, today VuDu offers up yet another HDX exclusive movie for .99; Borat. Besides The Departed and Braveheart, they have done titles not featured on Blu-ray.

What I would love to see is the PS3 be able to stream:

Netflix
Hulu
Vudu
Blockbuster
Youtube

..and the feeds from all of the various network sites (ABC, FOX, NBC, etc.)

At that point the PS3 really would become the "must have" home entertainment system that everyone would want.

Just cancelled my Netflix account because of the long ass wait time on BD's, especially catalog titles. Don't think the $4 surcharge is being spent to increase BD invetory. Probably going back to BB total access, I'll at least be able to get new BD's with the in store exchange.

How many movies at a time are you getting on Netflix? I am not having a long wait time at all for either new releases or catalog titles on Blu-Ray, but I know from experience that they throttle people who rent more movies out at time. This happened to me when I was using both the 2 and 3 out at a time plans. Now that I am on the 1 at a time plan, I get movies super fast with no delay.

I had the 3 at a time plan until the price increase and I cut back to 2 at a time. Until the last month I was getting every BD very easily. Now, starting in the last few weeks I am having trouble getting catalog BDs. For example, The Postman on BD has said Short Wait for well over a month. I mean is it that popular of a title? Luckily, I am still getting new releases around their release day when I ship a movie back on Saturday.

This would make 3 devices I have that use netflix (360 and tivo HD), and makes it less likely that I'll bother with a standalone blu-ray player. So I guess I'm springing for the logitech bluetooth adapter after all

Initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members. The free instant streaming disc leverages Blu-ray's BD-Live(TM) technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Netflix members simply slide the disc into their PS3 systems to reveal movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly.
Kind of ironic that Netflix on the PS3 requires a blu-ray disc initially.

"There is a certain symmetry to that" - The Big Chill.

The reason a disc is required is to not violate the agreement between Netflix & Microsoft according to several web sites:

Update: Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities noted that the Blu-ray disc required for Netflix playback on the PS3 may circumvent exclusivity clauses instituted by Microsoft. "We believe that the exclusive arrangement limits Netflix's ability to appear on the 'dashboard' for the PS3 or the Wii." Additionally, Pachter believes Netflix streaming will expand to Nintendo's console next year. "We anticipate that a similar arrangement will be announced for the Wii in the next 12 months."

Actually, I read on some site that said ALL BD-Live capable players will be able to stream Netflix with the disc. Might be just rumor, but who knows.

Now, at the risk of asking the obvious, wouldn't this put a serious dent in blu-ray sales? Especially if Netflix works a deal with studios to start streaming in HD? No doubt there would be a premium for an HD tier.

...but even without a lot of HD, every moment spent streaming a Netflix movie is a moment NOT spent renting a blu-ray.

Oh, wait....Of course - blu-ray and streaming are "complimentary".

Do you have Netflix? Are you aware of what content is being offered via streaming? Have you ever even used the streaming service Netflix offers?

They sure are complementary- streaming and BD rentals by mail are part of the same subscription. And as stated, the streaming selection is limited. No new releases, few/no extras...

Are you aware that the vast majority of PS3 users don't watch blu-ray, don't care about HD all that much, and streaming SD Netflix movies are something might try and no doubt like?

Are you aware that this is the same installed base that Sony and the movie studios *WERE* trying to woo into trying and perhaps liking blu-ray? Are you aware that they may NEVER try blu-ray after they start streaming with Netflix?

I have used it. I do not have it. But it works fine and lots of people obviously love it.

Do you even realize that Netflix has 17000 titles (15,100 more than blu-ray) for unlimited streaming at $9 per month???

Chalk up a few million more Netflix streamers.
