I'm wondering what the BDA is going to do to counteract their launch debacle. No one would have predicted we'd be heading into 2007 with HD DVD kicking Blu-ray's butt.

The article is dead-on about my view of Sony. They make good products, but they cost too much and then we are treated like criminals. The final straw for Sony was the rootkit which damaged Windows.

That study was based on AVS.
I think HD DVD fans should be shocked that it doesn't show HD DVD as being way more favoured. The HD DVD fans are always running all over the Blu-ray forums there spreading nonsense. "You'll never see a Blu-ray movie on a 50GB disc!" Okay then. ![]() |

Actually the methodology was spelled out in the report summary. But nice try with the spin...

I always thought that Sony was taking a huge gamble on putting a Blueray in the PS3.
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...or_Blu-ray/382 Bad Online Buzz, PlayStation 3 to Spell Doom for Blu-ray? This quote says it all.... "But perhaps most surprisingly -- and potentially lethal for the Blu-ray camp -- the report also suggests core gamers are actually dissenting from the format because of Sony's inclusion of a Blu-ray drive in the PlayStation 3. " To be honest I want a "standard format" and don't care who wins but I never did think it would be Blueray. Prepare to see Blueray supporters jumping to a much more unbiased stance soon...would be best for everyone anyway. Last edited by BSC : 12-07-2006 at 10:07 AM. |

On page 3 you'll note that the first Discussion Driver of the 2,000 posts analyzed between 10.01.06 and 11.23.06 is "Much of the BLu-ray discussion was driven by the release of Sony's game console on November 17th." Look at the rest of those quotes. Every single one is about negativity towards Sony. Let's look at excerpts from the 6 quotes. 1) Sony..has a track record of starting format wars and losing them. 2) Sony has yet to come through on its new formats, Betamax.. 3) I'm kind of glad Sony is getting screwed 4) The sheer arrogance of Sony is incredible 5) Sony forces you to buy Blu-ray 6) A Sony rep has admitted there is a problem Whoa!!! Let's not mention any of the troubles the A1 Toshiba player went through and is still going through. Let's not mention the problems the 360 had with its launch. I've got a better title for this fraud of a study. We hate Sony by Cymfony 26% of other posts were a "General dislike" of Sony. "Many posters noted other failed Sony platforms, including Betamax and MiniDisc, and felt that Blu-ray will follow the path of these other Sony failures" Yeah Blu-ray will probably follow the same disastrous path as CD, DVD, the Walkman, the Discman, etc. Not to mention SACD is more popular now than ever before. 1,000 titles between 1999 and 2002 and 1,000 titles alone in the last 15 months. Mainstream artists like Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and Dire Straits have releases in the last year. Genesis are releasing all 14 of their studio albums in multi-channel DSD SACD during 2007 and 2008. There are more than double the number of DVD-Audio releases on SACD, over 4,000 now. In fact if DVD-Audio and SACD are a format war, SACD wins handily. MiniDisc is still the #1 portable digital recording method, so it won it's format war. I don't see any recordable mp3 players. |

This format war will not be decided by gamers. A client of mine owns a high-end custom audio/video shop. All of his clients were waiting for the Sony Blu-ray player and he sold out his initial first shipment (12) on day 1. I was one of them and I'm blown away by blu-ray. Wait until the Q4 sales data comes in. Everyone who was waiting for the real deal blu-ray machines will be finally building their collections. Real home theater enthusiasts aren't going to use the noisy X-box 360 as their main HD player (and I own one).

Guess what's coming next?
"Cymfony chief strategy and marketing officer Jim Nail also announced an extensive six month online survey to determine whether people think water quenches thirst" |

Is that based on the fact that every single one of the 300,000+ PS3 units shipped already has sold?

It's not hard to sell 300,000 unites....even a fairly unpopular console could do that on a launch day. PS3 will sell well I believe but there will be gamers who look at it, as well as the lackluster reviews it has received, and say "no thanks". I'm a member over at IGN and Gamespot and let me tell ya....there are tons of gamers who have turned their back on the PS3 and just went for the 360 according to the boards. Now I'm not saying that they are turning their back because it's blueray but it being blueray does not help considering how badly they and behind in sales. Tell ya one thing....I wouldn't buy a PS3 until the format wars were over. I mean what will Sony do when hd-dvd is the standard (and it will be)? Will they take out the blueray and start putting hd-dvd drives in them? Not sure how that would work but either way I'm not buying a $500-$600 console (a big part of that $ is going towards blueray) that will not play HD movies in the near future.... |
